Chalong Underpass road surfacing to cause delays, project on target for end of May finish

PHUKET: The project engineer overseeing the construction of the long-awaited Chalong Underpass has warned motorists that surfacing of the roads through the critical junction will begin next Tuesday (Apr 30).

The work is expected to take two days, and expected to cause traffic delays while the work is bring carried out.

 

Somkiet Yimpong, Project Manager at the Phuket office of the Highways Department, told The Phuket News today (Apr 25),

No, not necessary. But they liven it up, same as construction in the west used to do. These days it is omitted if not necessary, but that does take the charm out of it.

They are not portraits. They are giant amulets for when the underpass is flooded.

Central divider would make it more unsafe. If a crash and fire occurs the backed up traffic would cause a lot of trouble. No escape.

Police this way can stop traffic coming the other way and divert to top road.

Looks like a death trap to me the minute a vehicle has to stop for any reason? and thats without factoring in any fun & games on an average journey in LOS... My first thought was it must be a service road then remembered where it is 😦

It could well end up being one way. Perhaps designed by the same people who designed the 3 way underpass at Central junction.

It's a cheap job, in places where safety matters and all of the allocated budget goes to the project, the tunnel would and should consist of two separate tunnels so traffic in each tunnel is going in the same direction.
