The Chief Ombudsman is General Viddhavat Rajatanun......

General Viddhavat Rajatanun (Ret.) was appointed Chief Ombudsman of Thailand:

  • served the military since 1975 until his retirement as Acting Permanent Secretary for Defense in 2012.
  • (re?)appointed Chief Ombudsman of Thailand following his Royal Appointment on November 18, 2018.

The junta-appointed NLA with passage of a new Ombudsman bill (143 members backing the draft and seven abstaining) in July 2017 determined the new qualifications of future ombudsmen. At that time Viddhavat Rajatanun and Boon Tapanadul were the incumbent ombudsmen who would have lost their positions with proposed new qualifications. But the NLA waived the new qualifications so both incumbents can remain in office until they

retire:

  • They would have less authority under the new law, and hence their qualifications need not be as high as that of the other agencies.
  • They would become an advisory body on state practices, without the authority to probe the ethics of political office holders.

Can it be said that the current Ombudsmen are independent from the government executive branch?
