Region 5 Immigration chief Maj-Gen Ponganan Khlaikleung was all smiles yesterday as he went to praise his staff at the immigration offices in Chiang Mai following the latest arrests of foreigners.

He was in town after 932 people were arrested in what has become known as the "pre-coronation crime sweep" that took place nationwide from the 26th to 30th of last month.

The sweep was designed to flush out foreign undesirables causing trouble or potential trouble ahead of the royal coronation ceremonies this long weekend.

It included more than 100 people not reporting their address.

The Maj-Gen gave some hearty "well done" encouragement to his underlings as he inspected work at Chiang Mai immigration office on Thursday.

The results of the crime sweep in the north were as follows:

Total arrested: 932

Illegal entry: 698

Not reporting address: 146

Overstay: 61

Aiding and abetting foreigners: 1

harboring illegal aliens: 4

Other crimes (unspecified): 22.

I know it's been in the news for a few months now, but for the crime of not reporting your address, I see it's an arrestable offence. Has it always been like, rather than just a fine?

Also, how much is the fine? Or is it 'at the discretion of the immigration officer'?

edit:

(sorry, most of my questions were already posted while I was composing this)

Strange they say 932 arrested but can only show photo of 2, probably trying the BJ method of Massive bs.

thaivisa only have only showed two, but on the other news many others are shown. Turn on your television.

Police say 932. Colin in Issan says they are lying. (Bs)

Police have reports, suspects locked up. Colin has his imagination.

Well done to the police.

make them work building the new railroads.

They tried that in 1942, it didn't work out that well.  Mind you, the movie was good and it did produce a new Thai attraction for tourists.

About 6 BiB though , I wonder how those 2 can talk to each other with scotch tape across their mouths.

Notice the poster behind in the OP photo...

I believe, that's an image of the national police chief Chaijinda on one side, and presumably the new Immigration chief on the other side... It's not a one man show anymore, apparently!!!

BTW, what happened with BJ yesterday?  Did I miss some news about that? His much anticipated return from his America trip???

Foreigners are getting arrested for not reporting their address now? What happened to the 2,000 baht fine?

Tickets/fines issued are typically reported as arrests.   Makes it sound more impressive....like BiB are doing more....makes police stats seem more impressive.

The sweep was designed to flush out foreign undesirables causing trouble or potential trouble ahead of the royal coronation ceremonies this long weekend.

So the police think that all these arrested foreigners are likely to cause 'trouble' ahead of the royal coronation?

Better off looking in your own Thai backyard - foreigners have scant interest in these events.

Poor taste especially as some reading this had relatives who were part of that brutality

698 illegal entries?  Well done everybody for allowing that ????

that's what I was going to point out also... Illegal entries generally seem to be the largest category of all these reported arrests  / citations / fines or apprehensions....  And the nationalities of these generally seem to mostly be the predictable Cambodians, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnamese and a few others....

Well ... always unmentioned in these reports is ... guess who's responsible for PREVENTING illegal entries into Thailand???  And if all these people are being arrested for illegal entry, just how exactly did they manage to get here in the first place if Immigration is doing such a great job???

Gosh now, let me think. Could it that there are extensive land borders between Thailand and Cambodia, Laos, Burma and Malaysia that are not constantly patrolled? Maybe Trump should build a Great Big Beautiful Wall?

That's certainly possible... But I'd betcha a lot of them are coming right across the border crossings in one form or another..... just like the Erawan bombers did, repeatedly, illegally....via payoffs.

Seems that there's a new Bigger Joke. Time to raid the schools now, most of them are still closed. Thumbs up for such enormous numbers.

When Thais go to other countries without permission, 100 baht in the passport is usually enough to allow them to go to the casino.

Time to check on Thais in other countries' casinos how legal they are.
