VIP taxis - Camry and Fortuner -  doing a roaring trade in Bangkok

More higher end cars are being used by a company offering VIP taxis.

KPN Bangkok Group are running the service with their KPN Taxi VIP arm. All vehicles are registered with the Department of Land Transport.

KPN are the third company to operate VIP taxis. The first two are running Mercedes Benz and EV or electric vehicles respectively.

KPN General Manager Phasinphat Wilaipatrachoke said that since they started their service in February it has been very well received. Seventy percent of customers are Thai and the rest foreigners.

They have had 20 vehicles in service utilizing Toyota Camry and Fortuners. They plan to have 50 more vehicles registered and in service by July.

They will also be employing 100 more drivers who will go through their in-company training program.

The service does not come cheap, however. A booking fee of 150 to 200 baht is charged for calls made over the phone.

The first two kilometers are charged at 150 baht with 16 baht per kilometer thereafter.

Further charges of 6 baht are levied if stuck in traffic. Exactly what this means was not explained in the Daily News story.

Those interested in the service can call the numbers on the side of the Fortuner in our picture or contact the firm on www.kpncarrent.com

That's if the driver turns on the meter.

Personally I book flat rate limos in BKK to avoid any of the random surprises that arise with regular taxis.

Why ask questions if you are not able or willing to give them a call and just ask them? Can't be that difficult to find out how to reach a taxi company.

You either blindly translate a Thai article, or you write your own and do your own research...

I can understand why a Mercedes-Benz or even an EV vehicle may be considered as a VIP mode of transport.  But a Camry ? whilst it is a perfectly decent average saloon car it is stretching that interpretation a little bit but as for a Fortuner ? no more than a pick-up with a tarted up body that has the "comfort" of a pick-up then that is pure fantasy. Shame Thailand does not have the equivalent of the Trades Description Act that would stop such bogus claims as a VIP vehicle.

Yes Sir, Camry is just a poor man's Benz. It is easy to see that the run-of-the-mill brands just copy the designs of Mercedes and BMW when they come out. The Camry is a blatant cheap rip-off of the S300, even the boot has the elevated exterior lines same style as the Benz, along with the front and back lights. Mazda have copied the front lights of the BMW's but just different enough to stop a law suite... and on and on.

I regularly book Camry limos from Swampy.  Perfectly fine and take two large cases and two cabin cases.  Aircon works fine and quite a nice motor to be honest.  Agreed, definitely not a high end motor but does the job.

It's VIP compared to the local elephant and ox based modes of transportation....
