Police in Pattaya shot a hotel employee four times in the leg after he refused to stop at a checkpoint in Soi Bongkhot Soi 3.

Somchai Bunsri, 30, had been taking Ya Ba (amphetamines) with friends and was on his way to work at a well known Pattaya hotel.

He refused to stop fearing having to take a urine test and was cornered in the soi. He produced a knife and went for officers.

At first they fired in the air, reported Daily News.

But as Somchai advanced Snr Sgt-Maj Somsri Srisawat opened fire.

Somchai was hit four times in the leg and treated in hospital.

A video on the Ruk Siam News page on Facebook showed him with a patched up right leg talking to the police and reporters.

Daily News reported that the suspect was charged with resisting arrest and drugs offences.

This was the fifth time he had been arrested on drug related matters.

Good work by the Thai cops.

He went at them with a knife. In many “civilized” countries cops are trained to shoot for the torso which usually kills the nutjobs. No need to kill this bloke.

My ex father in law worked in Germany during Baader-Meinhof years. He said there was a hero German police officer that shot dead a known suspect outside a restaurant. On TV he said he told the suspect to stop and when he didn't he fired a warning shot into his head.

"no need" that is subjective. An habitual yaba user who runs checkpoints and pulls a knife on cops might need to be killed.

No need to carry and pull a knife and charge at ppl.. A bullet to the head it should have been..

The reason they started shooting the torso was the idiot criminals were suing the cops SUCCESSFULLY even though the criminals were completely in the wrong. Dead criminals can't sue. A symptom of a very sick litigious society.

Actually that is inaccurate.  Friends, relatives, even the state can pursue wrongful death suits without the dead person being there, except in spirit!

On the contrary, it shows an astonishing lack of training in modern firearms combat technique.

Shooting to wound = dead civilians. Shoot COM or dont pull it

You mentioned that key word "trained".  This is Thailand so n/a. It was probably a warning flesh shot to remind him to share his daily drug dealing takings with them. nothing more nothing less.  Unfortunately got reported so the corrupt RTP had to come up with a story.

They gave him 500 bottles of of water as compensation hoping he will not sue...

Knife, they could have used tasers if they had, less lethal than bullets.
