Police in Koh Phangan have made a quick arrest in the case of a Norwegian tourist who was raped after the Half Moon party at the weekend.

He is a motorcycle repairman who was just out of jail where he had been held for dealing drugs.

Thai Rath reported that Rewat Hansuwan, 33, from Khanom, Nakorn Sri Thammarat has admitted to rape.

Earlier the Surat Thani court had issued an arrest warrant for Rewat after he was seen pretending to help the Norwegian and a male friend who were out looking for her missing wallet.

The warrant was for aggravated rape as extra violence was involved in the assault. The victim was punched five or six times in the abdomen.

Sanook showed CCTV footage in the area of the rape that aided the police investigation.

Thai Rath said in a TV video that the victim had initially gone out with a friend to look for her wallet.

She returned to her hostel - that appeared to be the Goodtime Beach Backpackers on Charm Beach - before going out to look again alone.

She then met her attacker on a motorcycle who claimed to be helping her before he raped her.

Sanook said that the suspect had come out of custody on Friday.

Thai Rath said he had been out of jail less than a month and had been inside for dealing drugs.

They seem to be taking these things more serious since the Koh Tao murders.   Sending a message to other locals that raping tourists is a bad idea.

Or the suspect doesn't belong to any family of importance.

Good point however how much jail time is this creature actually going to spend in jail for this horrendous crime, there is no benefit to keep him in jail! This man will be back out to commit again in a matter of months, that is why rapes are happening at an increasing rate here in Thailand. Travel warnings should be posted on all European travel websites and embassies about the real dangers for young women traveling in Thailand.

Given what appears to be a complete moral breakdown in Thailand, Ruling classes, government etc then nothing will change. A Thai raping a foreigner is almost dismissed these days.

I will leave the moral breakdown stuff out of it but i doubt there is any real difference in the number of similar rapes happening in other party hot spots around the world or how they are dealt with by the local authorities. wander around deserted places in the middle of the night anywhere and as a lone female you may be putting yourself at risk as may a lone guy.

as for thais raping foreigners being dismissed, i'll just put that down to too many hours spent on here

Police have arrested an ex-inmate for allegedly raping a Norwegian woman on Koh Pha-ngan in Surat Thani early on Sunday.

Rewat Harnsuwan, 33, a resident of Nakhon Si Thammarat was arrested at a motorcycle repair shop in Tambon Koh Pha-ngan of Koh Pha-ngan district at 8pm on Monday.

He was charged with assaulting and raping the tourist at 2am on Sunday. The victim filed a complaint with the Koh Pha-ngan police station on Sunday, prompting the national police chief to order that the rapist be quickly located and arrested.

The Norwegian woman said she lost her wallet on the beach at the Half Moon Party and so began walking back to search for it. A motorcyclist offered her a ride to look for the wallet but instead drove her around and raped her, she said.

Police checked security-camera footage from the area and saw Rewat talking with the victim before picking her up. Police conducted an investigation and learned Rewat’s identity before arresting him at the shop where he works and lives.

During interrogation, Rewat told police that he was riding his motorcycle home from drinking at a karaoke bar at 2am and spotted the Norwegian woman walking on the roadside.

Rewat said the tourist told him she lost the wallet so he offered to give her a ride to search for it.

He said the woman was drunk, hugged his waist and leaned on his bag and so he drove her to the repair shop hoping to have consensual sex. When the tourist cried foul he drove her back towards her hotel. After she jumped off the bike about 100 metres before the hotel, he grabbed her, punched her in the stomach and raped her before leaving her there, he said.

He said he went back to sleep at his living quarters at the repair shop.

So much for the retard trolls professing the girl was lying - where are your puerile comments now? Back in the gutter with the rest of your life skills methinks.

Isn't the contrast between the last (reported) Koh Tao rape and this incident amazing! Helicopter flying overhead all day yesterday - for what? Can they really spot a criminal from the sky? If so they would arrest half the population of the island!

All for show, while on Koh Tao it is all about protecting 'important' locals...

What is happening with the B2?

Yes and in the Philippines people get shot if they deal drugs... still drugs are being sold.

So you can do whatever you want there will always be criminals.

Depends if she's prepared to hang around for the trial.

If she just goes home, they'll probably let him go.

More like 50 days. It's not considered a serious crime in Thailand and as the PM said foreign women dressed provocitively are asking for it.

No need to put it down to anything it's FACT. It's you who spends too much time on here. Why not join us here in the real world. This is Thailand RAPE is not considered a serious crime. Go see how a woman is treated in a Thai court and understand why so many of these rapes be they Thai or foreign are neither reported to the police or get to court. Watch and see there will be no reporting as to what happens this slug because its considered a revolving door crime.

Pretty sure that if some worthless piece of crap is not capable of even considering the consequences of such actions in the first place, never mind the total 'immorality'/ outright evilness involved - like the consequences just don't exist, and I don't mean some serious bad-asses 'F it' philosophy! - then actually weighing up, post-capture, whether what they did was WORTH getting locked up for it, I reckon would also have to be equally an 'unponderable'!!! Hence no lessons are EVER learned by such 'people'.. Jail? Its usually all there is. Hope they get raped themselves and die there!!! Fair's fair, karma and all that.. right? Even hanging would be too good for them. And just a waste of rope (unless it was left, 'conveniently', in their cells!). There are no obvious answers to the very existence of these blindly evil people and their THOUGHTLESS crimes. If any 'god' existed no such things would even be happening - 'HIS hand in everything..' they say!! -  So, 'eternal damnation' aside as the crap it is.. On the spot executions for those 'caught in the act', anyone???

So the fact you think it is not an immoral activity to rape then you sir appear to condone the act. If you think other civilised nations cover up and/or give as lenient sentences to rapists as Thailand does then you appear to be extremely misguided.
