(Reuters) - More than 170 male students at Ohio State University claimed they were sexually abused by a now-deceased doctor and university officials had knowledge of the abuse but did little about it, a report released by the school on Friday said.

Richard Strauss was accused of abusing at least 177 male students when he worked as a physician for the athletic department and the student health centre from 1978 to 1998, the report detailing the findings of a year-long independent investigation said.

The report also said school officials knew of the abusive treatment as early as 1979, but complaints were never elevated to the athletics or student health departments until 1996, when the school suspended and ultimately removed Strauss after a "very limited investigation" into a student's claim that he fondled him during an exam.

School President Michael Drake apologised to the victims and said "the findings are shocking and painful to comprehend" in a statement announcing the release of the report.

"Our institution’s fundamental failure at the time to prevent this abuse was unacceptable — as were the inadequate efforts to thoroughly investigate complaints raised by students and staff members," he said.

Similar sex scandals in recent years have embroiled top officials at several major U.S. institutions of higher education, including Penn State University, Michigan State University and the University of Southern California.

Ohio State in August said federal authorities opened a civil rights investigation into how school officials responded to the allegations against Strauss, who killed himself in 2005.

How does a grown college student get abused without being a willing participant?

The doctor is, or was, an authority figure.  I am assuming that the abuse occurred with no other witnesses except a college kid and the university's MD.  The kid will expect to not be believed, without any corroboration, against the doctor's word.  The college kids were also probably smart enough to know that the university and any other local authority will back their own man as best as they can.  Any kid in college would know that such an allegation would be a serious charge.

Still, I know what you mean.  One would hope that such things just could not happen, especially at a school.  Maybe the doctor, being a smart guy, knew how to be careful.  The odd thing is that there wasn't enough talk among some of the kids to start something.  Many of them complaining about the same thing is different.  Thus, I wonder if later on there will be a story about some sort of cover-up.

PS, I have just reread the article, and there is a reference to some possible cover-up.

PPS, it sounds like the cover-up plan was to get rid of the MD, but do it in a way to limit or to avoid legal liability...and protect their own jobs as well.

The Gym Jordan defense.

College student/athletes are 17 - 22 years old, away from home for the first time, perhaps abused by HS coaches, many of the abused were holding scholarships, and deferential to those in power.

Next up feel free to lecture us on consensual rape.

What is it with Big 10 athletic dept doctors? (Larry Nasser)
