VIDEO: Tragic death of baby elephant forced to perform for tourists at Phuket Zoo

A baby elephant who was forced to perform tricks for foreign tourists at Phuket Zoo has died after both its back legs snapped.

The baby male elephant dubbed Dumbo was made to perform three times per day.

Dumbo had been the subject of a petition by charity Moving Animals who were campaigning for his release.

Last month, heartbreaking footage which went viral, showed the cruel treatment Dumbo was subjected to, showing the skeletal elephant being made to dance for the entertainment of tourists.

Tragically it was confirmed earlier this week that three year old Dumbo has died due to an infection he broke both of his back legs and was unable to recover.

The infection made him so weak that he collapsed under his own body weight while trying to free himself from mud inside the zoo.

He was admitted to the Elephant Hospital in Krabi on April 17th where he died three days later.

“We are devastated to announce that "Dumbo" has passed away, Moving Animals said in a statement this week.

“It now turns out that he had an infection in his digestive tract, and he became so weak that his back legs snapped beneath him.

“Despite this, the zoo did not realise his legs were broken for three days, until the baby elephant was finally taken to an elephant hospital.

“For "Dumbo" to die whilst under the so-called "care" and "treatment" of the zoo shows just how neglected these animals are in captivity.

“We want to thank everyone for their overwhelming support for "Dumbo". We hope that "Dumbo" is now finding the peace that he was so cruelly denied in his lifetime, and that his tragic story will urge Thai authorities to finally put an end to these outdated animal performances.”

Who'd watch such performance, it's nothing but animal cruelty. Just boycott the garbage.

Chinese, other Asians, Russians, certain others with kids and people that get taken there by taxis who collect their commission. Still plenty of markets, sadly.

There are many places here that ill-treat even abuse animals to make them perform for tourists.

Sick bar stewards, they only care about making money, sadly it will not be stopped anytime soon, as too many hi-sos are making serious money out of it.

When I was a young man the curate in our parish had a Labrador dog. His party trick was to place a slice of ham on its nose and utter various commands that ended in the word "ham".  The dog was trained to toss the ham in the air, catch it and swallow it only when the words "Protestant ham" were uttered.  Possibly as the word "ham" is sometimes used to describe a poor amateur actor that made it less cruel?

He had previously been a sheep farmer who use sheep dogs to round up the sheep. Maybe that's not entertainment?  Then of course there's the "Sheepdog Bra" - rounds them up and points them in the right direction

They need to start with their "dog attitude" fine to let them wander the streets  , crap everywhere, cause accidents, bark and be a nuisance, they dont "take care" of them at all they are there for their mild entertainment once past  puppy  stage.

Fine to beat to death a snake most of which are harmless.

Nong Nuch used to have  performing Elephants? maybe they could start there.

Westerners only complain, they don't understand thai culture. Welcome, Chinese!

Very sad. Money comes before all else, in this case causing the untimely and probably very painful death of the baby elephant. For a country where Buddhist ideals are supposedly so important, it really is time for Thailand to come into the 21st century line of thinking on animal care and what constitutes cruelty. And for its legal system to punish those who so badly transgress.

Close Phuket Zoo before any more of these unnecessary animal deaths occur.,

While they are at it prosecute everyone involved, from the top man down, with animal cruelty.

“Good zoos” do not abuse animals but try to educate visitors about the animal’s  uniqueness and habitat. The animals in decent zoos ( the zoo in Singapore, San Diego, or Berlin  for example) are given plenty of space to roam and well taken care of.

The Phuket zoo should be closed since it abuses animals and cannot provide a hospitable environment.

And the 'good zoos' are highly involved in rare animal conservation.  Another big plus for me. Singapore zoological park is a fantastic experience.

Another elephant will replace Dumbo and show goes on as usual. Nobody cares as long as tourists money flows in.

That's why Disney films like this one are so insidious I imagine you would say

i do not understand why shall be zoo at all !!!!

animal are for the wild not cages !!1

Unfortunately some of these animals would be extinct by now if they were not properly taken care of and protect at wildlife refuge centers. Unfortunately most of our planet’s unique wildlife exist in poor, developing countries that cannot provide adequate protection in there national parks. ( Look at Thailand for example.)

Decreasing human overpopulation and wildlife habitat loss would be far more effective and important than the little greenwashing these “fine institutions” do. ($eaWorld still continues to tout their “invaluable conservation efforts” to save poor ocean creatures from their harsh environment...) Find me any kid in the world that doesn’t know a single thing about dinosaurs - and yet nobody has ever seen a dinosaur in a zoo...

”CAPTIVITY KILLS - DON’T BUY A TICKET” as the great Ric O’Barry and former trainer of the Flipper dolphins has always said!!
