You should compare Thailand to Malaysia,  indonesia,  Philippines,  not to UK or Canada.  That's Thailand's peer group.

If Thailand is anti-poor but not anti-farang why is it so easy for Chinese to immigrate?

No one likes chinese....they do not spend.   There is a hotel with BUS LOADS of chinese coming and going every week.  I frequent the salon and massage shops NEXT to it.  When a bus drives by....I joked. "lots of customers coming soon"

There response is....chinese.  They do not get haircuts here.  NEVER.

Massage says.....rarely do they come for a massage

Buffets even REFUSE busloads of chinese since they just take EVERYTHING and throw half away without eating.  No consideration

How are chinese wanted and allowed to stay compared to other farangs....and chinese are farang too by definition.....

The economic impact of tourism on Thailand is 20% of GDP. That's huge.

The economic impact of foreign retirees as opposed to short-term tourists is far less,  but in the villages of Isarn it is very visible and obviously quite big.

The Thai ruling classes have no interest in economic development of the Isarn poor if they cannot get a cut.  To the contrary,  the conflicts in Thailand over the last 15 years were all about keeping the poor poor so they will better serve the rich.

Do you remember the good old times when a middle class Bangkokian could afford a live-in maid from Isarn (all condos had a windowless cubicle for her), a driver and a gardener, and a mia noi? Now they build condos without cubicles for the maid,  drivers and gardeners want real money, and the mia noi...

This is owed to Thailand's economic development (not to foreign retirees) through CP, Toyota, Sony, Marriott and so on. From this development, the rich get a cut in form of taxes, tea money, share dividends (Thaksin introduced the current economic model to Thailand with the help of Morgan Stanley and made a killing on the stock market. Ironically, at the time farang didn't like him because they, too, profited from Isarn poverty).

Thai ruling classes don't have any advantages from farang retirees in Isarn, however, just some - relatively minor, but sizable - disadvantages. So why should they keep the farang retirees here?

BTW other foreigners in Thailand are treated very differently because the established powers do have advantages from their presence:

Burmese, Cambodians, Laotians are cheap labor

Chinese help to integrate Thailand in the Chinese co-prosperity sphere aka Belt and Road.

That is sad to hear but makes sense.  Elite do not like their servants prices going up.

If people are poor and hungry....they will work harder and sell their daughters.  If they are fed and housed and content....they will refuse some work or demand higher prices.

So thais do not care about issan at all?   Isnt that their country men?

They are Countrymen when it comes to being the first in line to die in battle , to starve during a famine , to wait for rescue services during a national disaster or to wait for strong representation in the Government. They do have a value after all ......When the call for giving is announced , they are at the front of the line . When the taking is announced they stand at the back of the line.

Reason for anti-falang rules?

The media is not your best friend in Thailand. Negative events are broadcast over and over giving the impression that it happens over and over. And they usually rebroadcast older stories to fill up the time slot.  Yes, you do the right thing and yes there are legitimate visitors to Thailand but ever hear of throwing the baby out with the bath water?  Immigration does not have lie detectors or crystal balls to determine who's going to be the visitor with a body in a refrigerator or Canadian who commits suicide after being  arrested for dark web crimes. Lately they have been refusing entry to people who they feel require a more thorough vetting or at least a warning that they are engaging in practices that are similar to past violators of Thai laws.

I can recall most of these headlines from memory. Imagine hearing or reading stories like these on a daily basis.

Thai crime-fighting, has announced the arrest of another 35 foreigners who were caught for visa offences, illegal entry and other crimes.

Do you ever see those warning signs in Thai and English   "Beware of Non-Thai  Bag Snatchers".

Every time I see a panhandling  foreigner tap a Thai on the shoulder asking for money I see another ounce of credibility we might have kept , go straight down the drain.

It all adds up to changes in policy because of  a lot more than just a few bad apples.......

People seem to forget it is not only about the long term pension visa's here too. Eventually the business owners relying on farangs with non-b and WP's will also be the one to get in trouble if pensioners and unofficial long stayers leave more and more. Their biz will die off or not meet the 4 staff requirement.
