Hold your horses! Cops can still confiscate your licence until September

A leading policeman in charge of road traffic reform has warned the Thai public that police can still confiscate licences despite a notice in the Government Gazette.

In future motorists will be able to show a picture of their licence on their phone and police will use this to enter their new online system.

Fines and the new points system will all be connected automatically and tax will not be able to be paid until everything is cleared.

But Maj-Gen Ekkaluk Limsangkat warned the public that the system will only come in after a 120 day period from the May 22nd official announcement.

So until September 19th it's business as usual - police have the right to take your licence and make you pay a fine at the station, reported Daily News.

What's the current fine for not having possession of your licence? 1000 baht?

200 Baht unless ypou (or your Aunt Mildred) knows a cop at the station and then they will tear up the ticket.

The system of allowing the police to collect (and keep) traffic fines encourages corruption, unlike some other countries where the courts or local authorities administer the fines, and the money raised only goes indirectly to the police in the form of budgetary grants each year. The patrol officers have little incentive to be corrupt as there is too much chance of being caught by their senior officers, who unlike here are not part of the money system from police business.

But while there is no oversight of the police, who are poorly paid, underfunded by government, allowed to run businesses, and not held locally accountable, the corruption will flourish.
