I don't see that the upper hand is clear at all in the long political struggle in Thailand.Gravity has a way of asserting itself.

 

Certainly the Junta and those that encouraged them in their criminality would regard themselves as patriots.It was ever thus and throughout history tyrants have believed their crimes were committed for the benefit of the state.

 

As to the invocation of Thaksin to excuse the crimes of the Junta, I'm afraid this is wearing a bit thin.Thailand's democracy was work in progress and no sensible person would regard the PTP or its incarnations as bastions of democracy.Eventually in all democracies the public grows weary of the party in power and governments grow tired.It was open to the Democrat Party to reform itself and win countrywide support.Through cowardice and incompetence they chose to align themselves with the anti democratic forces.We live with the consequences

Yes, the "democracy in progress" claimants like to gloss over the facts. Like a suborned police force, a PM who refused to allow investigation into her party's crimes, PTP's private militia intimidating those that spoke out or campaigned against them. When a government is corrupt to the core and blatantly robbing the country, do you allow them to take out a huge loan so they can steal more, or act to stop them? Do you remember the PDRC? Isn't a hugely popular demonstration against corruption, and an attempt to whitewash the criminals involved, democratic enough for you?

We live with consequences all right; an end to political violence, the jailing and pursuit of elected criminals, and at the minimum a huge reduction in corruption.

If the junta wanted to be 'patriots', they'd have put all the checks and balances in place a long time ago. The checks and balances would have held anyone in office accountable for their actions. They didn't put any checks and balances in place and gave themselves amnesty and 44. 

 

Five years later and this is where we are. With a 'caretaker prime minster' who vets politicians and still has 44. They had 44 and a perfect opportunity to clean the place up. They did nothing but consolidate their power to prolong their stay against the wish of the people.

Yes, the laws he writes to create violations in order to suppress political rivals. It's pretty blatant when he says he will review, and must approve, all nominations of those that will eventually approve him as the new PM. At least the true colors are being forced to be shown so the international viewers know just how the Thai democracy is working.
