Murder for 50,000 baht: Thai wife's elder brother wanted British expat’s money

A court in Phrae was told that a Thai brother paid a man 50,000 baht to help him arrange the murder of his own sister and a wealthy Scottish businessman last year.

It was reported last year that Warut Ratanasajjakit, 63, wanted to get his hands on the money and estate of his sister Nott Suddaen, 61, and her husband Alan Hogg also in his sixties and originally from Scotland.

Warut approached neighbor Sima Utphamoon, 60, with 100,000 baht to commit murder. But he wouldn't do it himself because Warut wanted his own sister murdered, reported Thai language media in Friday's judgment in the high profile case.

But Sima took 50,000 baht (and 2,000 baht travel expenses) to introduce him to two accomplices called Pia Khamsai or Seuathong, 63, and Kittipong Khamwan or "Ai Yai" 24.

The court heart that Pia shot Mr Hogg with a shotgun.

While Kittipong held his wife Nott,  her own brother smashed her over the head with a monkey wrench in a garage.

All three then helped conceal the corpses by a duck pond using a back hoe.

The couple lived on a spacious and sprawling ranch style property in Phrae, northern Thailand.

Mr Hogg's Ford four door vehicle was then taken and sold on the black market. When the purchaser realized it was part of a murder investigation they returned it.

It was reported at the time that this act help uncover the conspiracy. It was further reported back in September that Warut had been involved in a long running feud over money with Mr Hogg and his wife.

The couple had lived for some time in Australia before setting up home in Phrae, Nott's hometown.

Elizabeth Gray - believed to be Mr Hogg's daughter - and two relatives from the UK were in court to hear the judgment.

Thai media reported that the daughter had been awarded 644,255 baht in funeral and travel expenses.

Warut, Pia and Kittipong have been sentenced to death. Sima was given a life sentence commuted to 25 years in recognition for his help in the investigation.

The family were reported to be satisfied with the judgment.

Chief judge Sunet Satha said this was a high profile case involving a foreigner and the severe sentences were justified.

Seems there is a case to put it around that if you die from murder or an 'accident', all money goes into hands of someone with power of attorney (not in the Thai family or wife) automatically that is in Thailand, and it will be sent to relatives offshore...regarding a house...mortgage, not lumpsum...pass up on the flash cars and flash talk also....wealth is stealth and all that.

Be worth more alive than dead, as others have said....

So he grassed his mates up

Would you not want your neighbour to "grass" his mates up if your BIL contracted them to kill you?

Before they actually did it?

Or would him doing so offend your severely warped concept of when, and especially to whom, "loyalty" is due?

So sad but life in Thailand is on par with Africa I'm afraid to say.

the man came to this country and probably helped the family but that wasn't enough the brother wanted the lot.hes pure evil  and I hope he does a 10 stretch waiting to be hung or shot.as I've said so many times, make sure your worth more alive than dead in the land of smiles.

Nothing wrong with that where evil is involved.

I wonder what the background is regarding the dispute over money between Warut and the now deceased Hogg and his Thai wife?

I'm going to hazard a guess that Warut had no money while the victims had plenty, probably due to a life of hard work.

Jealousy; many Thais feel the world owes them a living and envy the riches displayed by a farang achieved after forty years work plus savings.

Absolutely. So many go on and on here about Thais being animals its really ignorant and stupid. People kill people all over the planet. What about the dad who killed his own 5 year old daughter in the states or the guy who killed his brother in the UK to take his car?

Take this for what it was. Some bad seeds and greed. Doesn't matter where it happened or their nationality. The death penalty is fitting.

But unlike Thailand it does not happen every day.

Yep, he totally deserved what he got. How dare he enjoy the fruits of his labors. Hey mate, when is the next Antifa meeting?

It's not just Thais that feel the world owes them a living..... but in the West they are amply rewarded with "welfare or benefits", so no need to resort to murder, although it does occur rarely.

Probably stole or borrowed the 100K from Alan and then used it as a murder contract payment.

Dont have to be out in the sticks, anywhere in Thailand if a thai has a sniff of money, farangs

will be a target, especially if your involved with a thai and family are jealous.

anyone's life, the price of a foreigner's live is perhaps higher than that of a Thai's. In the West paid killers don't discriminate, they aren't racist after all.

Indeed.

I was acquainted with some very unsavory people in earlier days. In the late 90's GPB 500 was the going rate in Glasgow. And they didn't care about race, sex, politics, religion, age or anything other than the cash.

More expensive "down South". They were asking 2k to break legs! Most of this type of violence was driven by debts, money lending, business rivals -legal or otherwise, rather than sibling murder for inheritance though, afaik.

Poverty, greed, jealousy, fueled with alcohol and other drugs, lead to people doing nasty things. Add an element of self entitlement, lack of social responsibility and voila.

Unfortunately, there are some people who will do anything to steal other people's money, and avoid having to work for a living. They are not particularly deserving of the precious oxygen we all breathe.

I hope the courts are courageous enough to carry out these reasonable sentences. Death is what is deserved.

Can anyone even consider the state of mind required to beat your own flesh and blood to death, over money?

Sorry, but this worm was told once too often growing up, that he was special. The parents are at least partially responsible for this crime.
