Tourists at Nopparat Thara beach in Ao Nang, Krabi witnessed a rare phenomenon yesterday evening - a pair of waterspouts.

A video was taken around 6 pm as the swirling vortexes appeared over the sea and made landfall in the Nong Thalee area of the southern Thai province.

It lasted for about ten minutes. Waterspouts are known as "phayu nguang chang" (elephant trunk storm) in Thai.

Two houses suffered damage in Nong Thalee - some 200 roof tiles came off one property and a garage at another was affected. There were no reports of injuries.

Daily News reported that such a phenomenon had not been seen in living memory in Krabi.

Wikipedia says that waterspouts do not have the force of tornadoes. But marine animals have been known to be sucked up and deposited over land far away.

There is a danger particularly to seagoing craft.

The footage was recorded by an official of the Krabi Phitak Pracha rescue foundation who said that many tourists were amazed and delighted to see the waterspouts.
