Police on the holiday island of Koh Samui believe that a man who stabbed a German tourist and stole gold from his Thai wife may have been recently released in an amnesty.

They are checking the records of 100 men who have just been let out of jail.

The 60 year old German - who was not named - and his Thai wife Yong Noiphrom, 56, from Naratiwas, were followed and ambushed by a Thai man aged about 25-30 wearing a full face helmet.

The attack happened as the couple rode a motorcycle on a waterfall road between Lamai and Mae Nam.

The German was stabbed in the shoulder in the attack on Wednesday. The robber got a one baht weight gold necklace and a half baht weight bracelet. This was all worth about 30,000 baht.

ONB reported that the German did not want to be pictured yesterday when the couple went to the area with the police. He was said to have been terrorized by the incident.

His wife spoke about the attack. Bloodstains were found on the road surface.

Police are studying CCTV and checking all 100 men released in a recent amnesty on the island.

I don't understand why you would wear a gold necklace here, attracting robbers and hugging katouys.

We have the pleasure of one of these lucky recipients of a pardon living nearby. He has started his own 'business' raising roosters and nobody is prepared to confront him, even the landlord has given up asking for rent. The noise is driving everyone nuts! After living here 15 years I am now forced to move, perhaps out of Thailand as the place seems to be going backwards (and it never got very advanced).

Would it not make more sense to build larger prisons?

Or exterminate the filth?

Yes. Raising roosters in the city is a no no and roosters are the biggest noise making piece of crap animals alive. I feel with you on this one. Been there and fought it then got threats. Could care less as I'm not scared one little bit..

so, according to your statement it's their own fault. how he could see that she was wearing a gold necklace and bracelet, when they was riding a motorcycle. 1.5 baht gold aren't chains out of the latest HipHop video, they are rather small. or maybe he just picked a random couple anyway and hoped on his lucky charm. but if you get randomly picked for a robbery and they don't get what they have expected may be it can end in an other way.

German lucky to be still alive.

YES!  Especially on the Thai mafia run islands....these islands are some of the deadliest in the world, right up there with Marawi in Philippines occupied by ISIS sympathizers. He may have thought his thai wife would be protecting him...good luck with that idea.

I wonder if recently released convicted felons need to report their residence within 24 hours, you know, like the same way law abiding foreign pensioners are required to?

One hundred people released on amnesty on Koh Samui alone? Yikes! That's a whole lotta clemency being granted. Call me silly, but that's the kind of thing that might be useful to know when you're considering whether to take a romantic moonlight stroll on the beach with your wife, don't you think?

Man with a missus that looks like that the robber should have given the Kraut money out of sympathy for him ... lol

I bet you are a hansum hunk then?

Certainly hope so as character seems to be seriously lacking...

Do you live there? Or just pontificating?

What a dumb thing to say...

"ambushed by a Thai man aged about 25-30 wearing a full face helmet."...

Excuse me but if he was wearing a full face helmet how could they possibly approximate his age? Maybe all 100 of the men recently released from jail are in this age range and it's an easy group to point the finger at instead of doing thorough investigation.

It is to show off, impress her Thai neighbors, etc. Sad in a supposed Buddhist country that such ego things are so common.

Thailand is no longer the country where you can go around and show off your gold! Leave it at home or in the bank is better!

yup leave it at home where the maid, gardner, neighbor, or postman will steal it.

Yep.... rather worrying knowing 100 previous felons are out on the streets with little chance of employment.

How long before they turn to crime as in this case?

Yes mate, we never leave the house without the bulletproof vest and the armed carrier to drive us around. mostly we also get a few tanks as an escort.

What idiotic comment, obviously you have not spent much time here nor are you very smart if you come to such a conclusion.
