Phoenix tour boat fails to sell as authorities run up huge storage costs

PHUKET:-- The Phoenix tour boat, which sank off Phuket in July last year killing 47 Chinese tourists, remains unsold after an auction in May drew no bids as the Anti-Money Laundering Office spends more than B100,000 a month to store it.
 

Following the disaster on July 5, 2018, raids led to the discovery that the operators of the boat had laundered more than B1 billion. This, in turn, led to the seizure of assets which are being auctioned off by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo).

 

An official at the Amlo’s trade department said, “The Phoenix tour boat is still at the Rattanachai Shipyard. On May 22 it went up for auction with a starting price of B900,000 but failed to attract any interest.

Indeed (in September 1987), but she was almost immediately scrapped (March 1988).

Yea.. i mean its not like in the US where Boeing forgets warning lights out of greed hides it and countless lives are lost... I mean in other countries people are never greedy and companies never hide stuff.

Nobody, wants to buy it. If they let it stand on the ground in open air, it will cost nothing. probably scared of somebody stealing the shit nobody want to buy.

Granted, but one was a huge 8,000 ton RORO ferry, while this was a small craft hardly worth the scrap value. Why did they even raise it?

 

I stand by my statement - only in Thailand would they consider making money from such a sensitive disaster.
