Australian authorities on Friday announced the nation’s largest ever seizure of methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice”.

The 1.8 tons of drugs, which have an estimated estimated street value of $835 million, were hidden inside stereo speakers shipped from Thailand.

Australian Border Force (ABF) seized the drugs after abnormalities were found during an X-ray at Melbourne Container Examination Facility.

Also hidden inside the shipment from Bangkok was 37kg of heroin.

"This is the largest meth bust we've ever seen in this country, and demonstrates not only the brazen nature of those involved in this criminal activity, but the resolve of the ABF in Victoria and around the country to stop these imports,"  said Craig Palmer, ABF Regional Commander Victoria.

"Last financial year the ABF made 43,000 detections of illicit drugs weighing more than 11.8 tons -- so this seizure is equal to more than 13% of the total drugs we seized last financial year," said Palmer.

No arrests have been made and investigations into the shipment remain ongoing.

Meanwhile, police in Thailand said they have only just been informed of the seizure and will cooperate with their Australian counterparts.

That is a serious shipment and someone is going to be hurting very badly financially.

The big question to ask of course, is while they are catching record amounts, how much of if is getting through?

Demand will always create a supply after all, and there is a lot of money involved.

That's a lot of lost cash. Knowing what a friendly bunch of people drug runners are, you have to hope some are unable to pay what they owe and are rewarded with a new and deserved career, pushing up daisies.

A lot of people lives would get messed up with that amount of ice, and every bit the cops and customs get, the better.

Maybe Legalize all drugs, you get

Control, Tax revenue, and Bad boys out of business.

Win, Win, Win.

A drug bust on this scale is testament to countries doing it all wrong.

for the last 50 100 years. :jap:

Who shipped it should now be the priority...

Sadly, Australia has gone the way of many countries whereby doing drugs is by choice and preferred indulgent, crime is on the increase and the courts of law has to find a way to deal with stoned and confused people who commit crime under the stopper of drugs, Once upon a time Australia was a good country to live there, Not so much now...

does that mean all those envelopes have to be returned

Not unless the supplier was also the distributor which is doubtful. The supplier will be laughing all the way to the bank as he's already been paid. Its the distributor who will be hurting as he has paid for something that didnt get to sell on.

As long as countries have laws banning this, banning that they encourage criminals to make a quick buck to satisfy an artificially created demand.
