Why do you ask?
Are you hoping to beat a certain Scotsman from trying to get it on the cheap?????

Apropos of that (and bear in mind I know little about Hua Hin and have not been there for at least 15 years,) it would be interesting to know who does get his paws on the business. I would hope that whoever " inherits" it does the decent thing and at least buys Mr Doyle a ticket home.

TV members frequently seem to take delight in the misfortunes of others, rather than taking the position that "there but for the grace of God, go I". The Germans have a great word for this unfortunate affliction in people who have no charity in their hearts - Schadenfreude!

So he didn't do 90 days report and overstayed for 8 years?

Why the need for 90 days report and TM30 then if it is ineffective in tracing overstayers?

Now, now ! Bringing logic & common sense into the issue is hitting below the belt.

Probably the land owner will just take back the property after 3 months no rental payment

It's odd that these long term overstayers with expired passports can survive without ever needing to use their passport for anything in Thailand. Obviously they never stay in hotels but might need a passport to go the bank or something and the clerk might notice the passport and visa are expired. Presumably, if they drive cars or motorbikes they do so without valid licences which risks getting caught without a licence at a roadblock and dragged off to the copshop to for ID and visa check.

To run a bar and get away with such an overstay is quite impressive. I sympathise that his wife died, but if he still had sufficient wits about him to be able to keep a bar afloat since, then he should have also had the wits to sort his visa situation out. The end result of course, is that his way of life is now irrevocably ruined, as he will not be able to return for many a year.

Immigration may well not be as smart as they like to think, but sooner or later a persons luck does seem to run out.

More than likely that her family continued to run the bar and he drunk there till they had enough of him and now they have his bar.

Hope he gets some assistance back in Old Blighty for his depression.

If necessary, he would presumably be eligible for free treatment on the NHS without the 150% surcharge which he would otherwise have had to pay had he still been living in Thailand legally.

He may have saved money by not renewing his PP and not getting visas .

But it may cost him even more now , having to apply for a passport from IDC and losing everything in the bar

Would he, in fact, need to go through the rigmarole of applying for a new passport? Would it not be possible for him to be admitted back into the UK on his latest long-expired passport? Or at least obtain an emergency travel document from the Embassy who are presumably providing him with consular assistance?

The op said he ran a bar, didn't say successfully or not. Key point in article for me was it said he had mental health issues.

The fact that the bar was running suggests a degree of success.  If you want to take the word "successfully" out of my comment nothing else changes, he wasn't so debilitated that he couldn't run a bar was he?

The problem for us all is that the honest ones among us do the right thing but people like this Doyle guy tries to cheat the system and then all of us get punished in some way or another.  Bloody annoying really!

This guy isn't getting any westerners punished by his overstay.  Thai Immigration is doing everything possible to get rid of westerners.  It's easy for them when they catch a guy like this.

Getting the American, British, and Australian embassies to stop issuing income letters, and not accepting having your funds in a western bank, has cleared a lot of the expats out.  The TM forms for all movement is helping to clear out many more.

Haven't you noticed, when the Thai police catch a westerner doing even the smallest thing wrong, they publish it in the Thai news. They do this so they can get the Thai people behind purging westerners from Thailand.  They are trying to get the message out there all westerners are bad for Thailand.

The Thai leaders want the Chinese to replace the westerners.  The Chinese are used to being spied on, not having free speech or not much of any freedoms.  Having to fill out TM forms for everything they do, report to immigration every 90 days, and jumping through new hoops yearly just to get another one year extension on their visas are no problem with these people.  At least they aren't getting thrown in prison for posting on Facebook.  That will be coming to Thailand in the future.

Perhaps lacking compassion or empathy??

But I guess that when many observe the rules and regulations, when others do not people feel outrage

He probably never “ owned “ it in the first place and if married maybe the closest he came was if he used the User Fruc provision or something similar.

So the family were probably going to obtain it in the end.

Rather an inane post... IMHO

Plus when 40 drown in a boat - no one gives a shit, the Thais make some half-arsed apology to President Xi and it's back to business as usual.

Isn't that the rational behind TM30/90 day crackdowns, they can now, in theory, keep better track of over-stayers. Stories like this validates immigration getting tougher,

Well....actually no. TH30/90 fines only capture people who are in the immigration system and who, for the most part, want to do the right thing.

Those foreigners outside the immigration system will never be caught in crackdowns like that. In most cases, they need to be dobbed in. Perhaps a job for a vigilante like your self?
