Ha, have you ever seen the Mekong? especially now, in the rainy season...

Here's a pic of the Mekong taken in April 2018, in Nong Khai looking across into Laos:

I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to paddle across in the dark. In other places (along the borders with Cambodia and Myanmar for example) people probably just find a secluded area and walk through the jungle.

I'm sure there are thousands of places along the border(s) where people can cross undetected at almost any time of the day.

Bizarre comment - So news conferences don't happen in other countries ? Only they seem to be on the NEWS all the time in the UK as they are NEWS. Its what NEWS programmes tend to show

Every week they give numbers of crackdowns-which are actually because they don’t do their jobs 24/7.  If they gave out parking tickets, they would have a news conference about that.  Western news is generally more high profile or extraordinary events.  Anything and everything can be news, the question is, is it news worthy?  There are tens of millions of people entering Thailand every year, and thousands come and go through illegal checkpoints daily-this is common knowledge.  My point being-if it’s mundane, and it’s used to inflate importance, exclude it.  Maybe you do this yourself?  Thai people tend to embellish anything that they do.  This story did have some interesting arrests, but please exclude the people from surrounding countries that come here to work because Thai people do want to do the jobs, and they pay officials for passage.  Curious how long you have lived in Thailand, if ever?

Not a word of that is backed up by evidence.

Last year was Thailands STRONGEST year in terms of growth for the 5 years you mentioned - would have been difficult for you to get that more wrong - and as I pointed out to someone else who can't read economic graphics - Vietnams growth is from an infinitely lower starting point so you need to be a rather clever analyst to extrapolate the true figures which I'm going to take a punt doesn't exist on here. Add to that virtually nil inflation (and dropping), an enormous dollar reserve which is larger than the UK's or Germany, a $1.1 TRILLION GDP, record low interest rates, No 26 largest economy in the world.

Have you seen the baht levels ? You don't get a virtually untouchable currency by being a basket case ! I wish it wasn't true but they are the facts.

https://www.straitstimes.com/business/economy/thai-economy-grows-at-fastest-pace-in-5-years

and here is Thailands GDP - can you point out the 'unravelling part' please

GDP is a <deleted> metric as it depends on the amount of people living in a country, the only metric that counts in that respect is the GNI per capita, a metric based on the average citizen.

https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GNP.PCAP.CD?locations=TH&view=chart

And if you zoom into the chart it's flat as a dollar bill since 2014 when the junta rushed in, while it was nearly exponentially rising before.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GNI_(nominal)_per_capita

thailand is in fierce competition with Peru, Dominica but still far away from BOTSWANA

I think they have boats there u can hire to bring you to the casinos in laos, so yeah there's no border controls at all...

in recent months, noticed that the posted teaching jobs salaries remarkably increased,

probably the main cause of this was the result of these crackdown on illegal stayers and working even at some remote hidden areas, this campaign of arresting may offer some better opportunities to other legally staying foreigners,

Udon Thani will be a ghost town soon as foreigners flee the girly bars and make a midnight run to Cambodia.

I Think many of  those arrested are from Cambodia and Myanmar, not white “farang”...

xenophobia is alive and stronger than ever since BJ left...Time to start packing.  IO are going to flush every foreigner OUT!!!!

Absolutely!!

They could come for us at any time. They don't need a reason. Demand to see TVForum posts. Pay villagers to make complaints; he kicked a dog; he wouldn't help pay for the plastic flowers around the village. He killed a snake once. And it's into the wagon we go. All the protestations and reasoning will be of little use. "I'll pay you not to take me" you'll be saying. The daughter crying, the wife begging you to tell her your ATM pin.

Every time a vehicle pulls up outside I break into a cold sweat. That poor lady in Iran; locked up for 5 years. Spying was it!? This could be us; soon.

And where to run to when they come. Fortunately I'm a good swimmer and could get across the Mekong. But others might not be able to.

It's hysterical what Thais consider news.  It is as if the entire country is living inside a bubble.  There is little known about Thailand since the 13th century but it is safe to say Thailand has been around for a long time, and they are still considered to be a developing country.  I guess none of the western countries were interested in colonizing them. ????

"Also this week, head of the Thai Immigration Bureau - Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang urged anyone who knows of a foreigner involved in illegally activity in Thailand to report the matter by telephone to the Immigration hotline on 1178. "

meaning: if you know of a Thai involved in illegal activity, don't bother. We're not interested.  Too many of them.

This article was just a Cameroonian and Columbian smear campaign. They made sure to call out the 21 people who were not of Asian descent, while the other 2253 people that were arrested look like theyre Thai.

"This article was just a Cameroonian and Columbian smear campaign."

Certainly no British Columbians there,  I hope.

The reason they were not colonised was they they did a trade deal which the Brits loved, and no other nation thought it was worth upsetting it. Some Thai kings have been very astute.

I believe it takes 3 of the ex colonial countries in this area to match the GDP of Thailand.  Perhaps Thais didn't want to take the cut in pay.

No problem, there are boats to cross the Mekong ...:tongue: ;

Boats will not be any good. It would be akin to a turkey shoot. Best way is to get flippers and a bamboo tube and swim just below the surface.

There are sting rays and other creatures that could hurt the farang, so best to stay as close to the surface as possible.

We are all doomed anyway. They will be lining the Mekong looking for escapees.

It appears we are witnessing Thailand unravel its own economy; Vietnam and other places are gaining rapid popularity.  Thailand's economy, now at a 5 year low, will continue to dwindle as they manipulate and destroy what was once a great retirement haven. la khon!

So arresting illegals and criminals is bad for the economy? Don't you think Vietnam and other places do the same? Or do you think overstaying your extension of your Visa in Vietnam would be ok?

La khon John!

I use an agent for three reasons:

01 - Convenience

02 - I haven't got the dosh to do as the Thai authorities would like.

03 - protection.

My agent is well connected. If the BinB, the IO, or the army, arrived at my door, the first call would be to my agent.

and ten minutes in a room and he'd be selling your ass to jail lol..
