Two men were arrested early on Tuesday for operating two illegal abattoirs in a village in Nong Khai’s Muang district.

Acting on tip-offs from local residents, officials from the Nong Khai animals quarantine office, the Provincial Administration Department and the Nong Khai peacekeeping force showed up to search the Ban Nong Daeng village in Tambon Phochai early Tuesday.

During the search, official found newly slaughtered pigs in two houses that were allegedly being used as illegal slaughterhouses.

The owners of the two houses were arrested and identified as Suthat Mingsuk, 47, and Ekkarait Kunopakarn, 44.

If you want to spoil your appetite, "The Guardian" has a picture rich article about Thai pig slaughterhouses ("Death by clubbing ...").

More than a decade ago I had the displeasure to watch a cow being silenced with a sledgehammer and throat cut open with kind of a pocket knife. More details omitted.
