Another honest taxi driver, and the police? If they did their job well and enforced these pirates, there would be no need to go hunting!
The Thai taxi driver is as it seems very influential and powerful! Or maybe it's just the helplessness of the police!

Came through Swampy last week.

Ten minutes before the last Pattaya bus. (10pm departs)

They said full, have to get taxi.

I tried the folding stuff in the palm of my hand  (usually works lol).

Finished up in a standard service taxi at 1600 baht.

No one to share with.

Wouldn't have a bar of putting the meter on..

He just covered it over.

I couldn't be arsed arguing.

1 hour 35 to Pattaya.

Even passed the full 130 baht bus.

*(Meter was showing 1230 baht under the cover at Pattaya klang)

I sometimes just think about what gets charged in other countries and  say nothing..

I wouldn't like to do it, and no return trip certainty..

You have to mentally question the system at the airports.

If the buses are ended, after 10pm, the taxi is the only option.

(to Pattaya)

But that all said, this is Thailand and the laws are made to be broken.

And they will, and keep doing it.

2000 DonMuang ti Pattaya ..and 200 Bath for the driver for taking the shortest and fastest way.

...although there is only one way to pattaya 555555

My answers would be fast but there has been 3 ways we have been to and from Pattaya by car & bus. Apparently you can avoid the tolls so you can keep the toll money that is included in the fare and then get a tip from the nice farang Sorry we don't tip in Australia. We now refuse to tell them what flight we are on when booking. Other wise they factor in time for other things like to go 30 min out to go a particular fuel station. Drive to friends/families house to get some thing or one to take to Bangkok/Pattaya. By time the sky rail is finished the way things are going we will going to Vietnam.

The driver was willing to waste 30 minutes and gas, going back to the airport and then go to the back of the taxi queue,  because the tourist wouldn't let him rip the family off.

Logical really if you think about it.........in Thai.

Clearly there’s the odd exception, but over several years I’ve found Bangkok taxis to be one of the world’s great bargains. They do drive a little more boisterously than Australian taxi drivers, but they’re very knowledgeable and great at taking alternative routes to avoid heavy traffic.

I’ve never had a driver who’s not used the meter from Suvanaphumi airport to central Bangkok, and I always round up the 300 or so baht on the meter to 500. In Australia, I pay over twice that for a metered taxi covering a distance I’d walk if I didn’t have luggage. OK, returning from Bangkok to the airport they don’t like to use the meter, but as long as they don’t want more than 500 I’m happy. I’m aware that things are different in Pattaya, where I don’t use taxis.

Tell me where to find him! What a discount.

First few times I came here back in the '90's I got duped by taxis from Don Muang, I thought 900 was the normal price! Bastards. (we were talking back when 85 Baht was on the cards for one pound so it was no big deal) It still seemed cheap at the time, Airport to Amari Boulevard for 10 quid, it wasn't until a few trips later that I found out it should have been about 300 Baht!

Taxi from Don Muang to Pattaya was 1200 (Plus Tolls and alcohol) if I remember correctly, and for the price the Lao taxi driver played a small mandolin, stopped off at a few 7-11's for booze (which he drank too) then offered to take me out for a night of whoring, all for 1500 Baht, 150KMH on the highway rat arsed drunk, what an amazing experience, TAT should use that in their next ads for tourists.

I like that this scam comes with a printed out fare ride price-list it becomes more transparent for the victims.

It's not transparency.  People believe what they see written vs told to them.

Yes, It must be one hell of a hunt. When having license plate, a picture of the cabby, and the prices in plastic.

How would it be to ask the driving company for his home address and knock on the door. Maybe they can even call him on his mobile.

That might be a tad too technical.      ????

I've never had much reason to complain about taxi drivers until one journey from the airport.

After asking the driver to put the meter on about 4 times, he turns to me and says 'fixed price...800 THB'. By then we are out of the airport and on the motorway.

I just nod and say 'expensive....but ok'.

He then drives me to my condo wherein I get out of the car, get my bags throw him 200 THB (a fair penalty I thought for taking the p*ss) and simply walk into my condo.

He's standing outside shouting and screaming until the security guard escorts how away.

What's he going to do? Call the police.

No need for that, he already knows where you live.

You should have told him to take you back to the airport.

A mandolin playing, drunk taxi driver - sounds like a great idea.

Unfortunately, it seems that only fixed rates work. Huge boards at taxi stands and’ inside airports stating the price. Maybe even a ticket with a destination number and price.  Didn’t  they have this in Phuket years back?

Taxi mafia guys like this POS, is exactly why I always use Nam's Taxi Service.  It's usually between 1200-1500 baht depending on where I go.  The typical Bangkok to Pattaya is 1500 baht, and her drivers are always right on time and very professional.  She has picked me up at BKK airport at 1am, without any extra charges, and I don't have to worry that I will be dropped off in the middle of nowhere at 3am!

I've seen police with their bribe price list printed and laminated on the back of their clipboard before. Seems to be standard practice if it's a main part of your business. LOL

I've never had a problem out of BKK when using the official taxi stand downstairs. I wish they would do more to inform people of it's location. It seems like a secret that you only get if you survive the gauntlet of touts outside of immigration. I haven't used it in a while though as I have been using a private service lately.

Recommended the service and have booked for several friends.

These riveting stories of the wealthy tourist getting ripped off are what makes TVF worthwhile

I can see why Tourism bureau doesn't want this but if a taxi is allowed to run without a meter there is no oversight possible

A taxi in the Los Angeles could easily be 1500 baht ~ $50 USD for a 10 kilometer ride.  They also charge for each additional person in the taxi.

Thais are learning about the prices foreigners pay in their own country.  It is called the Internet, they can look it up on their cell phones.

I see tourists paying 50 baht for watermelon, 200 baht for a sliced mango, 140 baht for pad kra pao (minus kai dow) .

Setting a price for food or service is up to the one providing it, it is called capitalism.

Why they do not do a strong law enforcement against the THAI taxi drivers????????

Only when it come to foreigners, they RTP uses the full power of law.

I call that discrimination!!!!!

It's Thailand, rules are for foreigners only, Thais do what they like in their country!
