Big Joke set for sensational return to Thai Police, claims Thai media

Former Immigration chief Surachate Hakparn, aka Big Joke, could be about to make a sensational return to the Thai Police Force.

Reports from multiple Thai language news outlets (1, 2, 3) speculate that Big Joke is about to be appointed to the position of Assistant Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police.

The appointment would be a remarkable turnaround for Big Joke, whose career seemed all but over after he was unexpectedly and unceremoniously removed from his position as head of Thailand’s Immigration Bureau in April this year.

After rising to prominence at the Tourist Police Bureau, Big Joke was appointed as immigration chief where he quickly became Thailand's highest profile police officer.

He became synonymous with frequent and high profile arrests of foreign criminals and visa overstayers, under the crime fighting campaign of “Good Guys in Bad Guys Out”.

Backed by a savvy media team, he featured in news stories almost daily and built up a large following on various social media platforms.

As well as arresting illegal foreigners in Thailand, he also tried to crackdown on corruption within the Immigration Bureau by introducing the “no tip” policy, which saw stickers and banners bearing the same words placed at immigration border checkpoints and offices throughout Thailand.

However, just when it seemed like Big Joke’s stock couldn’t get any higher, in April he was suddenly removed from his position as immigration chief and transferred to a civilian role as a special adviser within the Prime Minister's Office.

Reasons for his removal from Immigration are still not known.

The news comes after Big Joke was spotted earlier this week making what is now a rare public appearance.

On Thursday, he was photographed visiting a temple in Nakhon Sri Thammarat.

Not based on anything solid then, but this being Thailand, I have learnt that just about anything is possible, no matter how unusual or remarkable. They don't call it "Amazing Thailand" for nothing after all.

Assistant Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police.

This could get interesting given the Junta's lack of control over the Police.

Duties?:-

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) (Divisional In-Charge): He has to perform all works and duties assigned by the Commissioner of Police and other higher officers in the Commissionerate. He has to guide and supervise the officers and men under him and to maintain their discipline.

Could be interesting times coming for some, not so pleasant for others.

Well that means someone at a very high level has deemed that DPM Prawit as outlived his usefulness. Maybe that person also considers Prayuth to be on a slippery slope. Time will tell.

RTP = corruption

Big Joke = corruption

He's also got excellent political/ military connections.

Rumour has it he (allegedly) syphoned off over 500 million baht.

Farang  who give these creeps the benefit of the doubt are Johnny tourists.

Is BJ returning? Anything is possible with Prayuth running the show especially now that Gen

Prem has died.

Well, that's why it called the Land of Smiles, everyone in the Thai government, Immigration and the RTP are smiling that BJ did not air the dirty laundry he was holding.  Thais have this motto, it's ok to fail just try again...... I suspect this time around if his proposed looming position is true, there will be a lot more sharing around of the rewards that come with such a prestige appointment.  In other words, someone on high read him the riot act.
