webfact Posted June 23, 2019 Share Posted June 23, 2019 Facial ID scanning for phone users in deep South to start November 1st Starting October 31st, mobile phone users in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat and the districts of Na Thawee, Jana, Tepa and Sabayoi of Songkhla, who do not have their SIM cards registered and their faces scanned for identification, will not be able to use mobile services. Colonel Pramote Prom-in, spokesman of the 4th region forward command of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), said that the new identification measure, via face scanning biometrics technology, was announced in the Royal Gazette on April 9th and June 21st and would come into force after October 31stthis year. Those who want to visit the three provinces, and four districts of Songkhla starting November 1st, will also be required to register their SIM cards with their service providers, otherwise their phones will be useless. And it certainly isn't just Thailand, Thailand is just taking a leaf out of others books. Just imagine what it is going to be like once they (terrorists) realize that things as simple as gate openers can be used to detonate IEDs, in fact anything with electronic communication capability and not just mobile phones. But they can use land line phones. As for face recognition, don't use "video" calls. It's likely being done under the State of Emergency that's been in place since Prayut made himself PM in 2014. It's only in the southern provinces that it is still in use through the auspices of the NCPO. Now that there's an elected government, PM Prayut's ability to expand that State of Emergency into the rest of Thailand will be more difficult as the NCPO ceases to operate when the PM's cabinet has been installed. This will do nothing but anger innocent people. Unless your SIM card is registered in Thailand, it does not work full stop in the provinces affected by the insurgency.
