The Nakhon Phanom provincial administration on Wednesday torched 8.4 tonnes of marijuana and 67.3 tonnes of kratom leaves in a ceremony to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking.

The ceremony was held in an open field in front of the Muang district office.

As part of the ceremony, the officials also launched campaigns against drug abuse.

Officials said the burned drug were seized by various agencies in the province during the past year.

From October 1, 2018, to May 31, the authorities in Nakhon Phanom seized 7 million meth pills, 6 tonnes of marijuana, 29 marijuana plants, 19.3kg of crystal meth, 67kg of kratom leaves and 58 cans of glue for inhaling.

A total of 1,809 arrests were made in 1,784 drug cases during the period.

In the not too distant future we will be asking ourselves why the hell we celebrated burning that which mother earth provided us for our healthy benefit.

A rate of just over one arrest per drug case probably means only the street traffickers/users are getting nabbed.   The individuals further up the hierarchy manage to distance themselves or pay off the right people.

Other than a narcotics seizure here and there for the Royal Thai Police Public Relations Office, it's business as usual for the drug cartels.

PM 2.5 levels rose dramatically but this time everyone seemed to be chilled-out about the pollution?

Well they did it on more places.

National drug burning day ! My wife, officer , had to attend. I told her, Thai government is crazy doing so and explained why.

The marihuana burning stupid, you can use medical. Lost.

There are companies now growing marijuana in Thailand, so probably this one they cant make money on?!

Kratom isnt a drug, only in Thailand (and 8 other countries) it is and only as Thai government couldnt make profit from it. You can easily buy it on internet. Indonesia (muslim) is growing and selling real good. SAme as other countries around Thailand

All the other stuff , burning out open, air pollution and exposing people to harmful smoke.

It should be incinerated in a furnace on high temperature with a wash installation for the smoke.

People getting high or inhaling bad smoke. I also see rubber tires on the burning pile and not to forget the wrapping plastic.

And then they condemn the cigarette being very harmful.

Were the meth pills also there to be burned? Chemical compound, dont know what it gives if you burn it. What chemical compounds will come free when burning?
