THE SERI RUAM THAI party leader said yesterday that the drug-related arrest of a party-list MP candidate will not affect the party, as it was a personal matter.

Sereepisut Temeyaves, a retired police chief, said it was next to impossible for the party to check each and every candidate’s background, adding that it was up to the police now to take legal action against the suspect.

Subhan Mahachananon, 35, the No 50 party-list MP candidate, was arrested along with two Chinese suspects and a Thai national at a container storage lot in Chon Buri province. The party won enough votes to appoint 10 party-list MPs in the March 24 general election.

The Chinese suspects were identified as Filuang Gloxion, 25, and Zhou Qiangch, 84, while the Thai was Joi Yaekaeng, 55.

Police found a tonne of crystal methamphetamine or “ice”, worth about Bt2 billion, hidden in 632 boxes of shoes in the container that was destined for the Philippines.

The four were charged with possession of narcotics with intent to sell, though Subhan denied the charges.

The raid was conducted after police received a tip-off about drugs being smuggled in containers heading overseas.

Police said they surprised three of the suspects, who were at the container depot at the time, and later extended the investigation to arrest the 84-year-old Chinese national.

Haul of drugs set ablaze

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) incinerated 16.467 tonnes of narcotics in Ayutthaya yesterday to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The ceremony, chaired by FDA secretary-general Dr Tharet Krutnairawiwong, was held at the Utilities and Environment Management Office of the Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate. Also present were foreign diplomats, government representatives and associated private agencies, including the police.

The FDA chief said the destroyed drugs had come from 6,910 separate cases over the year and were worth about Bt20 billion on the street.

The haul comprised 12.37 tonnes of meth or about 137 million meth pills, 3.4 tonnes of crystal meth, 143kg of ecstasy pills, 44kg of cocaine, 258kg of opium and 193kg of miscellaneous drugs.

He said 16.5 tonnes of hemp seeds were also destroyed.

The drugs were incinerated using pyrolytic methods in temperatures of 800 degrees Celsius, and the FDA chief said another round of disposal will be held on July 5.

Since 1997, the FDA has incinerated seized drugs on 49 separate occasions, burning 145.243 tonnes of drugs so far, worth Bt217.39 billion.

Up to 90.5 tonnes of methamphetamine has been incinerated so far, followed by 29.258 tonnes of opium, 25.27 tonnes of heroin and 193kg of ecstasy.

The FDA chief said the Public Health Ministry plans to provide rehabilitation for drug addicts after their arrest.

This year, rehabilitation will be provided to 219,275 addicts – 136,725 of whom have volunteered, 56,550 will be doing so under orders, while 26,000 will be undergoing rehabilitation as their sentence.

From October 1, 2018 to June 18 this year, the Public Health Ministry has reportedly rehabilitated 133,962 drug addicts or 61.09 per cent of all addicts arrested.

But it does show that the party gives little attention to the 'quality' of its' members and candidates for electorates.

What's new?

I agree, nothing new at all. The whole country is infected.

However, It might also be hard to know all about everybody. Like in this case, he is probably not a user. Just an importer or drug mule. How so you know that about a person that is just a member in the same party as you? It´s actually not meant as questioning your point, but more as a point of thinking.

Point taken however I suspect most folks would expect that parties have processes and access to police checks etc., etc., and they use them.

Perhaps there are checks mandated in the election laws?

Perhaps parties are required to lodge a set of such check documents with the electoral commission when they register their candidates?

I don't know.

They use the term 'addicts' for users.

They are clearly swamped by drugs for a good reason.

People LIKE them, they like being joyfully relaxed, forgetting their shitty nanny state bs laws with bad science and regressive mediaeval fear as the reasons for extreme control, and instead have amazingly enhanced sex, and gain incredible self revelations on harmless non addictive psychedelic trips, they're mostly regular folks, and they usually harm no one else, just like most responsible drinkers.

Trillions of dollars get exchanged, and so where are the millions of 'addicts'?

It's like calling all drinkers alcoholics. It's utter bunk.

Feel free to Google the world's most harmful drug. It's the one the govt monopolize here, even young promising Thai craft brewers are shut down.

Meanwhile they imprison casual users of less harmful drugs like coke, meth and heroin and 'rehab' them.

That's actually worse than imprisoning regular drinkers and rehabbing them.

If it sounds crazy, you've drunk the kool aid, because the science is calling b.s. on what you think you know about drugs. And so would users, if they could, without being locked up by gibbering panic merchants.

Booze is the worst, in any truthful medically based, frontline, peer reviewed study and it's glamorised.

The propaganda -if you substitute 'beer' for the word 'drugs' sounds ridiculous when read out loud. That's because it is.

Lastly, they hand all that revenue TRILLIONS, to criminals.

And then dirty criminally made drugs spread hepatitis, HIV and other disease into the non-using population.

It just makes no sense at all.

People who can't handle drugs, should be in hospitals, like people who can't handle drink.

Anyone who believes otherwise is only exacerbating the small core that make up problem users.

No one has stopped drugs anywhere, no matter what the punishment is. Duterte already publicly admitted failure. He could have saved himself the bother, and made some serious tourism revenue tax money legalizing that stuff.

Every time they demonize drugs and users, and disregard their main problem, alcohol, they're being irredeemably illogical. And that's the kindest way to put it.

Nice lecture but a bit off the real topic of the thread...

Former MP candidate faces smuggled meth charges

BANGKOK, (NNT) - The Thai Liberal Party leader, Pol. Gen. Sereepisuth Temeeyaves, has insisted that his political party had no involvement in the illicit drug trade allegedly engaged in by one of its former MP candidates who was apprehended on June 15, 2019, after police seized a shipping container bound for the Philippines containing over 985 kilograms of methamphetamine.

The discovery took place in Si Racha district of Chon Bburi province and resulted in the arrest of an additional four people, two of Thai nationality and two from China. One of the Thais arrested was Suban Mahachananonta, formerly an MP candidate for the Thai Liberal Party.

The deputy national police chief, Pol. Gen. Chalermkiat Srivorakarn, explained today that officers had cooperated with customs officials to carry out an investigation that led them to the container and Suban. The politician operates a used car business based in Chiang Mai that regularly exports products to China. It is suspected that Suban used the infrastructure of his company to smuggle methamphetamine out of Thailand. The meth found in the container was valued at about two billion baht. Further investigations are underway to intercept more suspects.

Mr. Suban has denied the accusations against him and stated he was unaware of the drugs in the container. Police nevertheless say they have evidence tying him to the drugs and have detained him for the time being.

Pol. Gen. Seripisuth meanwhile, voiced confidence that the case won’t tarnish his party’s name, assuring the public it is an issue involving just one person. He admitted that due to the large number of candidates running in the recent election, the party was unable to properly vet all candidates for any involvement in criminal activity.

So if you want real credibility then do the hard work, use credible vetting processes and yes it takes time. Whether you like it or deny it or whatever Khun Seripisuth, some of the mud will stick. It's up to you!

Is that really a valid point. I don't want drug users or importers or exporters or drug mules in parliament. Do you?

Let's please remember that importers or exporters or drug mules all make money off of drugs ultimately sold to teenagers and addicts etc. Do you really want these people receiving parliamentary salaries and benefits, etc?

Sorry, but you didn´t understand the key point. The key point was hard to know, hard to see, and hard to find out. In that case it´s harder to see that a non user is connected to drug s than if the person use at the same time. Puuh, now I hope you got what I meant. ????

I do not want people like that in a parliament either, even as I have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Seri Ruam is part of the anti-military coalition, so they have every reason to worry.

There is a solution, checking people for far more money than possible legitimate earnings, BUT I guess that would affect too many people in high places. I believe that was once suggested, but soon dropped, as it implied a tremendous amount of work.
