Once saw advert for natural spring water. Claimed thousands of years taken passing through underground elements making it the most pure water available. Expiration date 12 months.

The expiry can be due to the leaching of chemicals from the PET bottles?

I have always looked at these dates as suggested dates only, I have in the past opened up a chocolate milk past its use by and it was curdled but many things are still fine. What they need to do is state how long they can remain sealed and still be fine,  in most cases it is usually no good because of the wrong storage practices, same as dented cans, fresh foods may well go off but some do not

I have seen some foods really go bad, mold and fungus in the can etc.  Some dates are guidelines with a large margin of safety to avoid litigation.  Ignore at your own risk
