Caught by social media: German expat who helped Thai wife sell BBQ chicken to be deported - he's wanted by Interpol

A German man who was featured in a number of Thai news reports after photos of him helping his Thai wife sell BBQ chicken went viral is to be deported.

On Tuesday, Immigration Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Sompong Chingduang announced that Maximilian Fernsebner, who was initially praised by many Thais online for helping his wife make a living, is actually wanted in his native Germany on charges related to drug trafficking, robbery and child pornography.

After Fernsebner featured in a Thaivisa News report and social media posts in May after helping his Thai wife "Nong Naen" sell BBQ chicken outside a bag factory in Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima, officials ran checks on the thirty four year old’s immigration status and also contacted the German Embassy in Bangkok.

Immigration police discovered that Fernsebner was wanted on an arrest warrant issued by Interpol issued in 2017.

The warrant was issued after Fernsebner had first moved to Thailand, officials said, who only became aware of his criminal past after the coverage on social media.

Fernsebner had previously spent time in Pattaya but then moved to his wife’s home of Pak Chong as he thought he would be able to live under the radar in rural Isaan. That was until the photo of him selling BBQ chicken went viral.

Thai media reported that after police tracked him down to an address in Pak Chong the German went on the run for two days, hiding out in a forest and even using a plastic pipe so he could breath when hiding underwater. On the 3rd day he eventually gave himself up.

Fernsebner’s wife blamed ‘social media’ for her husband’s arrest.

She said that if he hadn’t been photographed selling the BBQ chicken, he probably wouldn’t have been caught.

Fernsebner’s wife said she and her husband had only been helping run her mother's stall while she was sick.

Facebook post snares German fugitive in Korat countryside

A German fugitive hiding in Thailand since 2017 has been arrested after a photo of him helping his Thai wife sell barbecued chicken was shared on Facebook.

A Facebook user took the photo of Maximilian Fernsebner, 34, and posted it online to praise him for helping out his wife on her stall in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Pak Chong district.  The post was widely shared, eventually drawing the attention of German embassy officials.

They alerted Thai police that Fernsebner was wanted by Interpol for allegedly selling drugs online, robbery and disseminating child pornography. Fernsebner fled as police arrived to arrest him at his village of Ban Pong Prathoon. He took refuge in a nearby swamp for the next two days. But after being hunted down and surrounded, he called the German embassy and asked to surrender to its officials.

When they arrived at the scene, he gave himself up and claimed to have evaded capture by submerging himself and breathing through a plastic straw.

He was finally arrested by police at 10.30am on Tuesday.

Pol Maj-General Pruetthipong Prayoonsiri, commander of Immigration Police Division 2, said Fernsebner entered the country in 2017 when the Interpol warrant had not yet been sent to Thailand.

He later left the country via a Nakhon Phanom border post before hiring a Lao man to smuggle him back across the Mekong River by boat.

After sneaking back into the country, he married a Thai woman and took up residence in the quiet northeastern village, only to be discovered by chance after his photo went viral.

Surely this was some kind of setup to portray foreigners in a bad way? If not its surely a coincidence the same guy in the news is later found to be on the run..

You couldn't make it up.

When we know we can be deported because we are likely to be wanted by Interpol, we stay at home or go fishing;
another one who has a pea instead of the brain.

And posters at the time thought he'd just be deported for working without a permit!

Oh ye of little faith!

How did he manage to get his extensions granted, hope there is some investigation into that.

His wife does not seem to grasp the fact that his alleged charges include child pornography

Blaming social media, what about her shielding him ?
