rooster59
All eyes on Prayut as opposition gets ready for policy debate By THE NATION House Speaker and Parliament President Chuan Leekpai House Speaker and Parliament President Chuan Leekpai said on Saturday that the government policy debate will begin on July 25 and can last no more than three days. The government is required by the Constitution to announce its policy statement to a joint sitting of MPs and senators. This debate is being closely watched by political observers as it will be the first time that the opposition can attack Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, and it will also be the first time that Prayut will face questions as a politician instead of a coup leader who had absolute power. Observers say they will wait to see if Prayut can control his temper in this first challenge from the opposition, which many see as a warm-up for a censure debate later. Meanwhile, Chuan said he consulted with Senate Speaker Pornpetch Wichitcholchai on Friday and they have both agreed that the policy debate must wrap up by July 27, ahead of His Majesty the King’s birthday on July 28. He added that the coalition and opposition whips and the Senate’s coordinating committee will consult one another on the allocation of time slots for the government, MPs and senators to debate the polices. The debate will be held at the TOT convention hall which has adequate seating for the 750 parliamentarians, he said. Chuan added that he has instructed the House secretary-general to coordinate with the government to distribute copies of its policies to lawmakers ahead of the meeting. After all, he is a literary giant and noteworthy scholar. As anyone who claims to have read three entire books (or at least looked at the pictures) obviously has an expansive, formidable, and deeply profound intellect. A policy debate with peasants of inferior credentials will be child’s play for the Dear Leader...and will be one more opportunity for him to demonstrate his world famous verbal prowess. Eligius
Note how already the time allowance for debate is being severely restricted - and is being done so using a 'justification' or pretext which NO ONE is allowed to contest or question or dispute .... As I said from the start of all this brain-rotting idiocy (fake election, fake parliament, etc.): the rules will be re-written or re-interpreted or simply ad hoc stipulations will be made ALWAYS to favour the junta forces and to protect their representatives ... webfact
Opposition to censure government and ministers during debate on government policy statement The seven-party Opposition will seize the opportunity of the government’s policy statement to parliament, starting on July 25th, to censure the government as well as some individual ministers. Pheu Thai deputy leader and an opposition whip, Mr. Chavalit Vichayasuth, said on Sunday that the Opposition’s debate on the government’s policy statement will be a rehearsal for the real no-confidence debate to take place in the future. He said the Opposition was waiting for the text of the policy statement from the government, after which opposition parties will meet to study the statement in detail to find out whether it covers all the policies promised by pro-government parties during the election campaign. Even before his Cabinet has been endorsed, the public polled less than 10% confidence in some ministries. And now Prayut lacks his favorite tool Article 44 while he faces a substantial opposition coalition in the NLA instead of the previous rubber-stamp junta appointed NLA.
