But anyone suggesting that there isn't currently a serious downturn is utterly deluded. Is it a long term thing or will everything recover on it's own? Only time will tell. I would also add to that that the current situation will not be attributed to one factor, or even just the ones mentioned in this thread, there are many many reasons why people of all nationalities have changed their behaviour towards Thailand and it will ultimately be down to a combination of all of them. What percent is serious? A recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth as measured by a country's gross domestic product (GDP). Stargeezr
Got to love Thailand shutting down the booze places, good thing there are the Thai mom and pop places that sell beer anytime. 555. What a country, good thing it is tropical. or the tourism would only be in Winter months. Geezer

Legally, what has that got to do with real life in Thailand? If I want to find a place to have a drink in Thailand, I can find one. As to the UK, that is not the case. Many pubs close in the afternoons, there is no business. When there were controlled hours, they were open. It is of course very silly of places like Pattaya etc to have these alcohol free days, closing pretty much all nighttime venues. But they have decided major religious days and voting days will be no alcohol (despite the fact that tourists do not vote). Outside of that, beer bars are open from 10am to 3am, some 24hour. Not so in the UK. And supermarkets are irrelevant, if I want to buy alcohol, I do it the day before a holiday, my fridge in Thailand is loaded every holiday. balo
I'm in Norway and just paid 500 baht for a beer. The food is good but who wants to eat out when a normal dish is minimum 400 baht +++ . So I miss Pattaya already.
rct99q
Not really on the main topic. Just came back from a week at the koh chang paradise resort, on koh chang, and it was very nice. Got crowded last friday thru sunday, but rest of the week was moderate. Beach was fantastic, restaurants were busy but not full, locals friendly. All in all nice week away. Most visitors seemed to be from Scandinavian countries and other places from around Asia, Japan, South Korean...all very pleasant. Dined with several groups of Europeans all stating they would certainly come back to Thailand. A little snap shot I know, but from the small sample i talked with most would return. SteveStevens
I was in Pattaya last year where I lost more of my money on the exchange than I could imagine and was eaten alive by bed begs in a low budget hotel at which I usually stay, which has now been taken over by, you guessed it, east Indians. I cancelled my trip to Patts this year.
