Great place to visit, I live there part of the year. In August it rains, a lot. You can count on it raining everyday, and most of the day. In a ten day span you might get one to 2 days of sun.  Plan your activities around hiking in the jungles, and swimming in the waterfalls. The waterfalls will be full, and the jungle green due to all rain. Plenty of bars if you want take a break and stay dry. Check out the East Side, hidden waterfalls, and great view points.

a beautiful island but very hilly if you haven't ridden a scooter do not try to ride one there, white sand beach is the most popular spot with big modem hotels at the right prices the beach is beautiful sea is clear blue water if you like villa living there is a beach with villas and a 9 hole golf course but you need to book ahead for that one

Like you, never been but I understand from a friend the White Sands beach area is very popular. We’re going to try it in August too. Just as a note had the devils own job finding hotel vacancies. That must be where all the tourists are....

A lot of hotels close at that time of year ( Green season ) due to unpredictable weather and tourist numbers.

White sands is the main developed area, I personally love the island and Klong Prao beach areas, in preference to White sands beach.

The island has one road that goes all around the island, Rural road I think they call it.

Taxis/ baht buses want more money on journeys if it's raining. It is far far better value for your money, (but nowhere near as lively) as Pattaya, Phuket, Koh Samui,  even if a little fiddling around to get to the place.

Very good for those with an active outdoor style of life.

It is in a national park and so hasn't been exposed to high rises and the decimation of its natural beauty.

The elephant island without elephants. Rent a bike and itl like 1 road all around. Think it stopped 3/4 of the and then go back. Have some bars. Quiet and nice after 22.00. I couldn't stand it 5 days since it's to calm and relaxing for me

I agree, it is a dump. Couldn't wait to get on that ferry and never return to the place. Phuket is heaven compared to that dump, cleaner sea, warmer sea, better restaurants, everybody not trying to rip you off. Tomorrow I will tell you how I really feel.

I'm a regular visitor and often go in what they call the 'green season' there - the last 2 trips were in August.  Maybe I've been lucky but although it rained most days, it only rained for a couple of hours. The upside of staying in the 'green season' is that there are some real bargains to be had - hotels that normally charge 3000-3500 per night can be found for 1000 - 1500.

There may not be so many places to visit in Koh Chang but that's actually one of its attractions for me - its a national park! However, over the 15 years or so that I've been visiting, there has been quite a lot of development there - the place is slowly being spoiled.

Beaches - for me lonely beach. In the main tourist season the other beaches can get too busy for me but there are many other beautiful beaches.

Swimming - there are so many beautiful places to swim its hard to recommend a single one. Snorkelling is good but if they are available when you are there, take a day trip to Koh Mak or Koh Kood - the latter has some of the best snorkelling in Thailand.

Jungle - ask your hotel if they can recommend a guide. Although its a national park, most of the island is in private ownership, you don't want to get into trouble with the locals.

Parties - not something I've done but the people up at Bang Bao and Lonely Beach are probably the best to advise you on that.

Girls - do you are mean girls in the bars? There is one main bar area across from White Sands beach and several smaller ones. The choice can be limited in the green season as most of the girls are not locals and only work during the main tourist seasons. The Sabai Bar at White Sands restaurant also has live music in the evening and opens it doors as a disco around midnight. Great fire show there that you can watch whilst having dinner on the beach.

You will find a lot of information here:

Edit:

If you are looking for the 'party life' as the last 3 posters seem to have been - forget Koh Chang, it won't suit you. Calling it a 'dump' because its not your cup of tea is very shallow in my opinion. Would you visit a temple and expect a soapy massage there? Is there a disco inside the Grand Palace? - of course not. Its a bloody national park fellas, horses for courses - get real.

I love the place, it’s layed back and different.

the songtaws are a rip off so best to hire a bike.

the main girl bar area is in White Sands Beach - turn left out of Makro and it’s very shortly on your left.

the hills are a SERIOUS challenge in places, so be aware.

you can’t go round the island by road as there is a break in the south - almost everything you want is on the west coast, so don’t be sucked into staying at a place miles from anywhere.

best of luck ????

Ha Ha Ha, yes, I hadn't noticed that. Obviously a joker. I remember the baht buses in Patong wanting 100baht to travel about 1km - that was years ago, god knows how much they are now.

Funny you should mention that, went with the gf's family once. We turned left at the main road after leaving the ferry.  I remember thinking......left? there's nothing down here - after what seemed like hours of driving we finally arrived at our resort - at the bloody marina, almost a complete circuit of the island! That's about as far as you can go, close to Bang Bao but you can't get there due to the incomplete road.

Asked her later why she had chosen a place miles from anywhere - she thought it looked nice on the internet and didn't know the road didn't go all the way around.????

Totally agree with all you have said. I was thinking the other three posters had been to a different island to me!

I did and still do, think it's great and I am going again this year.

Maybe, it has something to do with me being mid fifties but give me Koh Chang any day over Pattaya or Phuket. I also didn't see or understand them saying the beaches were poor quality, have those guys been to the sewage ridden beaches of Pattaya?

I actually did the same as you are doing or did and grab a great hotel at the top end of the range for a bargain price in Green season. Living here a long while, I actually don't mind the downpours, in fact I enjoy tropical rains.

We are headed there in September, then down to Siem Reap and on to Phnom Penn, HCMC, and Hanoi and then fly back to BKK and up to Isaarn. Going with a mate who has over the last two years quit Pattaya and found Isaarn more ' bang for his buck ' another guy in his late fifties.

I have done all the above places many times but it will be a first for HCMC.

Im living most of the time here in Koh Chang and I do enjoy it a lot. As I'm not keen on girls and party this island is fantastic.

There are many things to do people usually aren't aware of. Book an excursion with Thomas Koch who will bring you to places where tourists never go. Have a walk in the mangroves on the east side. Go swimming in waterfalls and have a goid lunch after at a restaurant near by. Book kiteserving lessons....

By the way the sea in Pattaya is that polluted that I would never swim in it. Koh Chang sea is much cleaner or clean.. But in August you should not do it as the sea is too rough.

Definitely August is not the month for party.

Same here, one visit is enuf. Just another island that was once beautiful but now very average in that desecrated way the locals specialise in. .
