Secret Deal for Naval Outpost in Cambodia Furthers China’s Quest for Military Network

Use of Ream naval base would help China’s military project power across a broad swath of Southeast Asia

SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia—China has signed a secret agreement allowing its armed forces to use a Cambodian navy base near here, as Beijing works to boost its ability to project military power around the globe, according to U.S. and allied officials familiar with the matter.

The pact—signed this spring but not disclosed by either side—gives China exclusive rights to part of a Cambodian naval installation on the Gulf of Thailand, not far from a large airport now being constructed by a Chinese company.

Some details of the final deal were unclear, the officials said, but an early draft, seen by U.S. officials, would allow China to use the base for 30 years, with automatic renewals every 10 years after that. China would be able to post military personnel, store weapons and berth warships, according to the draft.

Time for a moratorium and then and outright ban on military bases outside one's home country. It has simply allowed foreign powers to conduct wars without risk to their own country. This has led to wars for political and commercial interests, as opposed to just wars fought over invasions...eg WW2 was a just war by the west; Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Afghanistan are illegal wars started by the west.

This secret agreement appears to contravene an unified ASEAN security agreement:

https://asean.org/asean-political-security-community/

  • "the ASEAN Leaders have agreed to establish the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC).
  • The APSC shall aim to ensure that countries in the region live at peace with one another and with the world in a just, democratic and harmonious environment."

Cambodia may cause the U.S. to pursue its own bases in Thailand and Vietnam to offset the Chinese military buildup in Cambodia. That may force Thailand into a commitment either for U.S. or Chinese military bases whereas in the past the Thai military could play off the two superpowers through diplomacy and trade.

Perhaps a revisit further back in history. It may help reveal more to your exclamation.

China takes over Cambodia.  Now trying to take over Thailand.  Look at all western currencies—down. Tourists and exports way down.  China may have a hand in this with secret purchase of Thai bonds—hot money.  Could be a connection.  BoT won’t tell who buys the bonds.....very strange.

China's currency has taken a hit against the baht too, down 13.5% over the last nine months.

This is old news.

Everyone was talking about this in Phnom Penh back in November and before.

They have built a road from the base that is very heavily over-engineered for trucks/lorries but just happens to be engineered for tank transporters carrying two tanks. (So the scuttle-buck in PP was saying.)

Co-located with a casino ?

China wants to surround Vietnam so that China can intimidate Vietnam into allowing the Chinese ownership of the South China Sea. Northern portion of Vietnam is a hard nut to crack, pressure from Cambodian border and the sea will be needed.

Quotes from Port Technology (2018):-

"China and Myanmar have signed a framework agreement to build a new a USD $ 1.3 billion deep-sea Port in the Port of Kyaukpyu in the Bay of Bengal, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua"

"Kyaukphyu Special Economic Zone"

I presume this is identical to the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone with its deep-sea port, so there is the possibility of Chinese warships "visiting" Myanmar. Question:- Control of the South China Sea, Gulf of Thailand, Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal(Indian Ocean)??

Great proposal, sure to go through the would-be world government we call the UN on the nod.

(Then I woke up).
