Basic ECU damage question..

Kwasaki

Recommended Posts

Bought a not runner old bike with a simple ECU but has anyone see this before the unit has been oozing a gooey mess at one stage I've checked stator and regulator and they seem ok and within range, so I guess the unit just gave up.

I gonna check relays & wiring for shortages to see if that could of cause it but I would of thought a fuse would blown before the cooking of the unit started, strange !!.

Any guru thoughts about. ????

You don't wanna hear this dude, but IMO, i'd convert that to points and condensors. :ninja:

And carbs if it has EFI....

Seriously, that is f##ked with a capital F.

Get on the blower and get hold of your favourite UK bike breakers and have a S/H tested unit sent out.

In the meanwhile find out why it fried.

Over here a common problem is mice eating cables.

Have a very close look at the circuit board. Are there any dry solder joints or signs of overheating , brown diodes etc. That funky goo might just be a sign that sometime over the past 23 years , something has reacted with the rubber bung that seals the plastic ECU housing. Petrol , solvent , de-greaser etc.  Honda has never been able to make decent voltage regulators/rectifiers.  Look up David Silver in England for new old stock , or better still buy aftermarket.  Dont fit points , LOL. It already has carbs. Do not convert to a leather drive belt , hand gear change or a oil/acetylene headlamp.

Thanks buddy it has 4 carbs didn't want fuel injected crap, wanted a bike I can work on myself.

One of the reasons I bought it, it's a basic ecu electronic control unit with relays.

I just wondered what seems cooked it never seen it before.

Thanks for input buddy,

You quoted " Have a very close look at the circuit board. Are there any dry solder joints or signs of overheating ".....No there isn't that's why I was curious as to why the gooey mess, thanks will clean it up gently as see what happens.

I checked the rectifier in the wrong way my multimeter is not good enough so will get that checked again.

Also sorry guys should of gave more info it's the favourite bike of Guzzi ???? a Honda Fireblade 1994 second edition CBR900RR, I had a 1992 one, one ot the first delivered to England, had it for 12 years and couldn't afford to bring it to Thailand so need to sort it and just luv these bikes, the Blade history is interesting.

The new CBR 1000's in Thailand don't compare there for pussy's. ????

Replaced the complete electrics in my BSA with Honda ...

No issue

Banished the Prince of Darkness

Its not high praise , saying Honda electrics are better than a 50 year old BSA with Lucas. I have seen adverts for better quality regulators/rectifiers . I would start with these.  The goo on the ECU may be a reaction to some chemical spilt on there years ago. ECU may be fine. Need fully working electrics to find out.  I had a 96 blade , in maybe 98. Nice bikes , apart from the 16" front wheel.

Well the control unit is cooked cannot get any response, checking the loom and down loaded wiring diagram for the blade, looking Thai for a s/h or new not much fun with so many selling, my nearest place for Honda is Phitsanulok so will start there for the partt, by the way I like 130 / 16 front more rubber on the deck. ????????

They don’t make them cdi units anymore(Ecu)....

there is a few on eBay.....the plug and wires look the bigger problem...,,is the plug melted and <deleted> to.

you will probably find many bikes will share parts with this blade, the cdi unit looks really similar to the one on my 98 plate Honda hornet.

Electrex World Ltd.

UK company, most of their stuff is UK made.

Fireblade stators, rotors, reg rectifiers, cdi units, race ignition systems, IN STOCK, all new, no S/H.

Not cheap, but quality never is.

This is what i would buy , instead of suspect quality genuine Honda parts.

Thanks guzzi, I tried there web site and can only find stators, the only cdi 's I could find was for single cylinder m/c.

K, they have more than just stators for the 900 odd cc Fireblades, i've seen race ignitions and reg/rectifiers, maybe a CDI is not available for your model. Dunno.

There are a couple of other m/c electrics specialists in the UK, Google is your friend.

Thanks, have bought starter relay from them £30 odd or so thought reasonable found it was cooked too will try and contact them about cdi units..

Will check stator again surely that can only have voltage to do this to the fuse holder in the relay.

Just curious. Does the offending item smell burnt? may not be from over-current at all?

Not really burnt smell more of a plastic melted smell I guess, it was very dirty and until the clean up didn't realise it was where the the 30 amp main fuse is located,  have ordered one from UK place guzzi recommended.

Thanks for reply and any help with ordering Honda parts or compatible quality aftermarket parts from anyone will be welcome. ????

Try David Silver for "new old stock" Honda parts. I still think something could have spilt on these components , rather than them melting due to excessive current.

Thanks will do and yeah checked ohms stator reading on my multimeter and all terminals read same.
