Get in line, and own up to your stay in this country. I have not seen anyone complain who had the 800k in the bank for any length of time. Most just leave it there. Some guys have a lot more guts than me that they would move to an Asian country without a substantial amount of cash in the bank. I'd have been afraid to come. But this thread is about tourism and most of the posts are about non tourists who were trying to stay on a tourist visa. Why would a tourist go to Vietnam as opposed to Thailand 10 years ago. I think most of information that tourists get is at least 10 years old. They don't know about the governments of either country or about Visa things or lines at the airport. But I'm not a good example because I'd have nightmares if I went to Vietnam so I'm not a good person to comment only about the Thai side of this topic and the obvious statistics that make Vietnam a 3rd world country that will take 20 years to get where Thailand is today. There are many people on this forum that have a love for Thailand and its culture and want the country to succeed. It was the government before military that started many negative trends. Three embassies wrecked the lives of their expats who didn't have cash in the bank. Regarding my Thai friend, a psychiatrist, the Junta has created quite a lot of different problems for younger and older people. Of course also for the rest. The suicide rate was never so high amongst Thais. They haven't just destroyed the country for tourists, they've destroyed it for their own folks. Popular Post simon43
If they are worried about Vietnam, wait until Myanmar opens up and gets going. Take a look at the map of the Myanmar coast - thousands of small islands. Of course it needs development and not least, investment. It may be a way off but Thailand needs to be prepared. Last year I lived in Naypyitaw, Myanmar. One weekend I decided to visit the nearest beach, about 150 Km as the crow flies. Anyway, here is the beach: The only person on this beautiful beach was me..... oh, no hotels, no restaurants, nothing. Which actually is not surprising, since it took me 2 days of hard riding on an off-road motorbike to get to that beach which, BTW is on the mainland, not a Burmese island. The lack of roads and supporting infrastructure is probably the only reason why Myanmar hasn't eaten Thailand's tourist figures for breakfast. Wait till the Chinese start investing big time in Myanmar's fledgling tourism industry. They won't be concerned by some of the ethnic issues that dissuade western countries from investing. 2

It means that it may be just buzz from unhappy Thai expats that wish to relocate. It means Thai authorities are then concerned about losing the Chinese, who are their golden goose. And yes, they have invaded Cambodia, building casinos and Vietnam as you say. You are right about Westerners liking destinations closer to home, i haven't heard many people in Europe saying: hey let's spend 600-800 euros to go to Ho Chi Min. They did however say, let's spend that and go to Thailand, mainly because the image Thailand has created was consolidated over years and years. The trouble is, once newbies see what Thailand looks like nowadays, they will leave with a bad taste in their mouths. The effect will be felt in time.
