does a digital nomad in thailand need a work permit?

Enforcement of that particular law in the case of digital nomads is currently (and deliberately) not weak. It is non existent. There is no guarantee that this will remain true in the future, but working as a digital nomad, with no Thai customers or employees, is currently zero risk. The only issue is the lack of a suitable visa type to be a long term digital nomad in Thailand.

OP- You could enroll in a Thai language course and get an ED visa and just work from home between classes while gaining a useful skill in case you decide to retire here. Also makes it easier to meet good girls for fun.

Another option is to have a place to live here and in a neighboring country and do the 6 months a year that the embassy replied "hinted" at while doing the other 6 in the other country. 2 beach side condos isn't a bad way to live. :wai:
