the OP has simply assumed that one and all use 'HP' as their abbreviation, for Hire Purchase

@KittenKong mentioned it's general use as the abbreviation in the UK, as it also is in Australia... etc  hence not volunteering a blow by blow description.

 

Ask yourself, in relation to your own country of origin; what mneumonic term denotes the action of someone buying an item, by utilising 'Finance Terms' . Insert that term into the Title for your own perusing...
