Sihanoukville in Cambodia gets bad reports these days

This is old news, the Chinese invasion is complete in Sihanoukville, They own the city and they have bribed off all the officials to build casinos and hotels everywhere. No westerner would ever set foot there again. 

Forget it , better to stay in PP .

Sihanoukville is to all intents owed by the Chinese.

There are now over 100 casinos, all owed by Chinese or the police.  Last I heard from a resident who moved out completely this year they were building about 50 more. 

Resorts for Chinese are springing up like weeds.  Westerners are not welcomed.

The sewer system is virtually non-existent. Trash collection is sporadic at best.

Raw sewage and trash are every where.  Basically most of the town is an open sewer, and it smells like one too.
Most of the few beaches that can still be reached are covered in trash and sewage.

Kampot and Kemp are still a nice places to visit and stay but do it quickly because the Chinese are starting to buy up property in those towns.

Phnom Penn is rapidly being developed with Chinese money but lots of the fancy high rises are virtually empty, especially the high rise bank/office buildings.

I spent a few days in Sihanoukville in 2011 and found it a sleepy little town with hardly any traffic; certainly not the hell hole shown in the video. It might have been the time of year as the SW monsoon was in full flow but there was no construction at all apart from some local houses.

I have friends who live in Thailand and the Philippines and they tell me that it's happening there as well, although perhaps not so overtly.

Really? I lived with Thai people for years in areas with zero farangs except me, and one wouldn't even know there was a military government.

No I started avoiding SHV long ago. I'm in Phnom Penh and the Chinese are everywhere. There are a lot of villas on the street nearby that are packed with Chinese. The Chinese invasion certainly isn't 'so called', hence our move to somewhere more rural before the years end.

Thanks....so where in Cambodia would you recommend, not necessarily for living but for a short sojourn from say, Pattaya.

Single guy, likes the ladies but also like to chill out near water.

Bear in mind that I've "done all the sites" in PP, Siem Reap, SHV but not recently (2013)  I'm really just curious to hear from someone who knows LoS and Cambodia fairly well.

You only have to look at Walking Street in Pattaya. The vast majority appear to be Indians these days with hardly a falang in sight.

 

Few of them appear to ever spend any money though.

They spend a lot of money in Restaurants and Indian Clubs, the latter  of which there has been growth and expansion.

Then they did not read newspapers, listen to the radio, or watch TV and they would have to have been blind, deaf and dumb. Its not that Thais dont know about the military coup and subsequent oppression and the misnanagement of the nation but that they are too frightened to discuss such matters.

Some friends of mine visited there recently and told me all of the ex-pats had already left the area. It is now almost entirely Chinese owned. Massive development are going up, or being planned. It is the next Chinese colony. 40% of all the foreign direct investment in Cambodia is now Chinese. The name will eventually be changed to Cambochina.

Well, there is no question that China is a threat, on a dozen different levels. They were the world leader (as long as you ignore the Eurocentric history books) from around 1100 AD to around 1800AD, and they did have control of many of the world seas. As far as they are concerned, they are simply trying to regain their rightful place in history. And it is my belief, they will stop at nothing to achieve that. So, we do need to be concerned, and ignoring their intentions will lead to great peril.

 

Xi, and the rest of his cronies are smart, determined, have a lot of money and power to back them up, and they will succeed. No doubt that within 20-30 years they will eclipse the US as the economic leader of the world.

China is doing what Russia wants to do, except the Chinese have infinitely more resources....as well as patience.  They're already making significant inroads in Africa and South America.  It seems they have a particular eye on countries with weak economies and corrupt leadership.  And Cambodia fits the bill perfectly.  I do feel sorry for the indigenous folks.  In a few years, the common Cambodian won't have much of a country left...at least one that they can call their own.
