Sihanoukville in Cambodia gets bad reports these days

Recommended Posts

This is old news, the Chinese invasion is complete in Sihanoukville, They own the city and they have bribed off all the officials to build casinos and hotels everywhere. No westerner would ever set foot there again.

Forget it , better to stay in PP .

I was in Sihanoukville just under a year ago.

Sihanoukville is to all intents owed by the Chinese.

There are now over 100 casinos, all owed by Chinese or the police.  Last I heard from a resident who moved out completely this year they were building about 50 more.

Resorts for Chinese are springing up like weeds.  Westerners are not welcomed.

The sewer system is virtually non-existent. Trash collection is sporadic at best.

Raw sewage and trash are every where.  Basically most of the town is an open sewer, and it smells like one too.
Most of the few beaches that can still be reached are covered in trash and sewage.

Kampot and Kemp are still a nice places to visit and stay but do it quickly because the Chinese are starting to buy up property in those towns.

Phnom Penn is rapidly being developed with Chinese money but lots of the fancy high rises are virtually empty, especially the high rise bank/office buildings.

went to cambodia 2 years ago loved it,went back in january this year-----wouldn,t go back if you paid me.

The same sort of thing is happening in Siem Reap, and many other places as has been mentioned above. In Siem Reap a year ago, our tuk-tuk guy said that China was upgrading main roads throughout the country. The number of hotels that were going up was incredible.

I spent a few days in Sihanoukville in 2011 and found it a sleepy little town with hardly any traffic; certainly not the hell hole shown in the video. It might have been the time of year as the SW monsoon was in full flow but there was no construction at all apart from some local houses.

*sigh*

I have friends who live in Thailand and the Philippines and they tell me that it's happening there as well, although perhaps not so overtly.

One man's delight is another man's torture.

It sure does sound like the corrupt Cambodia government is selling out the country to the Chinese.  Just horrible, especially to the common Cambodian.  They'll have nothing left of a country....or end up servants to the Chinese.  Sure hope Thailand doesn't go that way.

Thailand continues on its' own path of destruction, Thai people are servants of their own pseudo military governement.

Really? I lived with Thai people for years in areas with zero farangs except me, and one wouldn't even know there was a military government.

Quite possibly, but 2 questions occur:

Are you in Sihanoukville (or have you visited recently) ?

If not, is wherever you are living suffering from the so-called Chinese Invasion?

Lucky you. Actually I'm rather surprised that an old TVF hand like you took me so literally.

No I started avoiding SHV long ago. I'm in Phnom Penh and the Chinese are everywhere. There are a lot of villas on the street nearby that are packed with Chinese. The Chinese invasion certainly isn't 'so called', hence our move to somewhere more rural before the years end.

Thanks....so where in Cambodia would you recommend, not necessarily for living but for a short sojourn from say, Pattaya.

Single guy, likes the ladies but also like to chill out near water.

Bear in mind that I've "done all the sites" in PP, Siem Reap, SHV but not recently (2013)  I'm really just curious to hear from someone who knows LoS and Cambodia fairly well.
