While Cambodia welcomes an ongoing influx of Chinese tourists, investment and development, the world at large increasingly suspects that China is launching a military buildup in the country for stronger Chinese influence in Southeast Asia.

Dara Sakor, a new China-backed coastal resort in Koh Kong province, located some 400 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh by road, covers almost 20 percent of the country's coastline.

Having obtained a 99-year land lease from the Cambodian government, the Chinese developer was allowed to develop on 36,000 hectares of land in the province, raising questions about China's intentions in Cambodia.

Moving in by stealth.... soon they will own Cambodia, controlling the local economy, be one of the biggest employers, own most of the roads & infrastructure... they will be telling Hun Sen what to do soon!

Anyone with half a brain would have seen this coming for the last 10 years

Since they started selling Cambodian passports to the Chinese for$100,000 USD

landholdings then can be purchased by the holders.

Cambodia soon to be called  "little china" & will be destroyed

The investment by China in Cambodia also ensures that the Government will never vote against China on the South China Sea issues at ASEAN making it a "toothless tiger"

This is exactly what Thailand is trying to avoid

We have to fear the same will happen to Thailand.  Too many bi-lateral trade deals with ChiComs, and a sky-high Baht gives the strong suspicion China is behind the hot money inflows that Bank of Thailand has coveted for several years now...

I think Thailand will be ok, as well as Myanmar. Myanmar have knocked back a few Chinese development opportunities recently.

Cambodia IMO is gone to the Chinese. The kicker will be the Mekong river, quite a few countries involved here and that's where the shit might hit the fan. We can see some issues right now.

I think its all over rated. english people getting paranoid because the english signs are being replaced by chinese ones. the chinese dont need a military base in the region, they can buy what they want. and as for controlling the economy, there is none to control unless they build it first. the dictator treats the cambodians as slaves, the chinese wont be any worse
