Local authorities on Tuesday closed the popular Mae Kasa Waterfall tourist destination in Tak’s Mae Sot district after a schoolboy drowned in the waterfall’s creek on Sunday.

Tambon Mae Kasa Administrative Organisation announced that the waterfall would be closed to tourists until further notice. It cited the heavy rains during the rainy season that have caused the creek’s water level to rise. The boy was swept away by the high waters and then became stuck in an overflow drainage pipe at a dyke below the waterfall.

The victim was identified as Chatchai Chatsuphapong, 14, a student at Mae Sot Municipality School.

The TAO said it would be dangerous to continue allowing tourists to swim at the waterfall during the rainy season, and so has closed it until the rains subside, the TAO chief for Mae Sot district, Chaiyapruek Chianthanrak, said.
