webfact
Ripped off Chinese woman gets her wish as top cops raid Pattaya boiler room Picture: Daily News Daily News reported that a top level police and international crime suppression raid on a house in Bang Lamung resulted in the arrest of 12 Chinese men yesterday. They had come into Thailand as tourists and were running an online scam supposedly selling goods to their country folk. The raid was led by Chonburi provincial police chief Pol Maj-Gen Nanthachart Suphamongkhon along with the Nong Prue station chief and the head of Pattaya's tourist police and other agencies. The Maj-Gen said that the Chinese men had rented house number 48/9 in Moo 6 Nong Prue for 95,000 baht. It suited their needs as it was quiet and out of central Pattaya. But the local police became suspicious when the 12 Chinese men didn't go anywhere, preferring to remain in their rented accommodation. A search warrant was subsequently applied for from the Pattaya court. The group were using fake profiles of pretty Chinese women on QQ Chat. They were taking orders for goods and not sending the merchandise. Losses are thought to be in the region of 10 million baht. While the raid was taking place the group received an angry and tearful communication from one female Chinese victim who said she had been ripped off to the tune of 7,000 Yuan (about 28,000 baht). She sent a picture of handcuffs expressing the hope that those who had conned her would soon be arrested. She now has got her wish. Police are expanding the inquiry to try and ascertain who was the mastermind behind the scam. BestB
How and why would police get suspicious of a house located away from the main streets ? Did police watch the house 24/7 to know they did not leave the house? me thinks someone is not telling the full truth

That's how crime gets nipped in the bud in the burbs in most places. Methinks someone subscribes to the old notion that the RTP always need to get paid to do their duty and otherwise sit around playing video games and planning lunch with their mia noi? The exponential rate that these illegals and overstayers are being rounded up nationally suggests to me that all departments of the RTP are increasingly doing a whole lot more than they ever did before. Joe Mcseismic
The electricity meter man probably informed the police of the unusually high electricity usage. This is how they bust marijuana farms in the UK. All those computers use juice.

Boiler room gangs don't bring this much computer equipment with them. Without thinking about it too much, they probably bought a bunch of their necessary gear locally. It's not unlikely the police get calls from vendors wanting to stay in their good graces when large purchases, like ten+ desktop units, are made by foreigners, with delivery to a house, not a business location. That info alone might not mean a raid but it does put a pin in a map and a bring on a bit of scrutiny.

ChrisY1
But of course, the real "boiler rooms" in Thailand remain unaffected......probably something to do with the rumoured B17m paid each month!

peterb17
I quite like looking at Thai Visa- catching up on news/ general craziness- can everyone please STOP mentioning TM30 - it’s boring, dull, not interesting etc - just not amusing in any way possible . The boiler room/ dating scams are now a $billion business - it’s vast. I was reading today that the scams are bringing $millions into Lagos - there is a whole property/ entertainment/ club/ restaurant scene that revolves about these scams . So many lonely single women out there - it’s not good.
