Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports will propose, to the economic cabinet meeting on Friday, a waiver of visa fees for tourists from China and India, who plan to stay in Thailand for not more than 15 days. It is proposed the waiver would start on November 1st and last for 12 months.

Tourism and Sports Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn said that the one-year visa fee exemption might help encourage more Chinese and Indian tourists to visit Thailand than the waiving of the 2,000 baht visa on arrival (VOA) fee, currently given to tourists from 19 countries, including China and India.

Tourist arrivals from China dropped 4.73% to 5.65 million during the first half of this year, compared to the same period last year, which is in contrast with arrivals from India, which registered 24% increase to 978,000 for the first six months of this year.

If people can travel just because they save on a cheap visa they probably shouldnt be traveling at all. Are these douches in charge of this crap mentally retarded?

Its one of the two main criteria for being in any senior position in Thailand isn't it ? ????

To insult us further, they

1. claim that rich Indians and Chinese are the ones who will care about visa fee waivers

2. Then they allow hoardes of these low quality people in who break the law in significant numbers

3. Then they try to tell us TM30 will tighten national security and lump farang expats in with the low quality tourists they beg to visit Thailand.

 2000 bht =$64

I don't mean to sound condescending and every litle bit helps, but any tourist who would make a vacation decision on $64 usd savings........

You can see it is possible after you witness 4 Indians share one bottle of beer.

I see people insinuating 64 dollars is not a lot of money for a 15 day permission of stay (to spend further money, that is).

So a couple forks out 128 dollars.

A family of four 256 dollars.

For maximum 15 days, realistically 7 to 10 more likely.

It is probably one of the most expensive visa fees worldwide, given the duration, not kidding.

A 10 year US visa is 160 dollars, for example, if I am not mistaken.

In comparisson, a 6 month Thai tourist visa (METV), costs 200 dollars.

This headline is so misleading!!! It is not a 1 year free visa at all! It is a waiver of a fee for a 15 day visa, such measures lasting for a period of 12 months! Don't think it will make a ha'p'orth of difference to tourism!

As a matter of fact, what we need to realise, is that Visa On Arrival has been fee exempt for a year already.

It's free now, as we speak, until Oct 31. And they want to extend it for another year, starting Nov 1st.

Meanwhile, tourism from China is plummeting, even with the free entry.

The little lady running the beer wagon at the weekend market on Theprasit Road in Pattaya spends half her time chasing Russians, Chinese and Thais for using the chairs and tables and not buying a drink. If the Indians buy one between four then that's a step up.
