dddave
Does Thailand have a general Civil Service Exam? If yes, is it regularly scheduled or irregular? How much weight does it carry in getting people jobs or do connections and patronage prevail? Any other knowledge about it appreciated.

Thailand have Thai Exams for all sorts of jobs same as police, army, gov workers & teachers. Only Thais can apply for them as I understand it. My good Thai friend has just passed his Thai teachers exam for the fifth time after taking it and getting high marks each year but he had to get his marks into the top 10 for selection of getting the govt teachers job. The reason for the previous 5 years refusals is obvious his poor.
dddave
Thanks, Kwasaki. My Thai niece has an interest in working for the Customs Department so I was wondering what pathways to such employment exist. I'm sure having a relative in a ranking position is still the easier path.
