NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York City's chief medical examiner determined on Friday that suicide by hanging was the cause of death for financier Jeffrey Epstein, whose body was found six days ago in a Manhattan jail cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

The sparely worded official announcement detailing the autopsy conclusions rebutted a host of conspiracy theories - including one promoted by President Donald Trump - that had circulated on social media about the death of the well-connected former money manager.

Epstein, 66, was found unresponsive on Saturday in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), triggering investigations into the circumstances of his death. He was arrested on July 6 and pleaded not guilty to federal charges of sex trafficking involving dozens of underage girls as young as 14.

Chief Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson said her determination of the cause of death came after a "careful review of all investigative information, including complete autopsy findings."

"Cause: Hanging. Manner: Suicide," the statement said, without providing supporting details for Sampson's findings.

Details of the findings had been leaking into the news media over the past few days. Two law enforcement sources told Reuters on Thursday that Epstein's neck had been broken in several places, confirming a Washington Post report that to some had raised questions about possible foul play.

Epstein, a registered sex offender who once counted Trump and former President Bill Clinton as friends, pleaded guilty in 2008 to Florida state charges of unlawfully paying a teenage girl for sex.

Epstein had been on suicide watch at the jail but was taken off prior to his death, a source who was not authorized to speak on the matter said previously. At the MCC, two jail guards are required to make separate checks on all prisoners every 30 minutes, but that procedure was not followed, the source added.

Separately, a team at the jail on Wednesday began an "after action" review, which is normally triggered by significant events such as a prominent inmate's death, a person familiar with the matter said.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr ordered the removal of the warden at the jail, the Justice Department said on Tuesday. Barr had criticized "serious irregularities" at the facility. Two corrections officers assigned to Epstein's unit also were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of investigations.

Two women who said they were recruited 15 years ago to provide massages to Epstein, only to be later sexually molested by him at his Manhattan mansion, filed a $100 million lawsuit against the financier's estate on Thursday night. The lawsuit was at least the second against the estate over Epstein's alleged misconduct following his death.

Surprise Surprise, move along please nothing to see here.

How does one hang oneself when no hanging points above waist height in the cells ( from reports I have read) ?

Hence the need for the DoJ IG investigation to be transparent and not under the control of Barr who has already made misleading statements on this case.

And nothing in the report to say anything was found around his neck. Very difficult to kill yourself AND THEN hide the evidence!

Surely photos SHOULD have been taken at the scene of the crime before anything was moved.

So you've seen the report?

[They] work on the belief that time smooths everything away. It usually works. How long before the disbelief just melts into disinterest. Anyone still talking about the massive inconsistences in the LV shooting report? Hard to find anything on it.

Maybe strangled himself with something tied around his neck? say a rope with a slip knot? but then how the hell did he get rope?

Where does it say there was nothing taken from a round his neck or photos were not taken?

But obviously attempts to revive him do take priority...

and broken neck bone consistent with strangulation, not this type hanging.

I thought a broken neck was more likely to mean where the neck had suffered trauma causing the vertebrae to part or come out of alignment, thereby severing the spinal cord, I doubt it means the vertebrae were actually fractured.

Yes and the Lusitania was sunk out of the blue with passengers on board because Germans are just bad people, the declaration of war by the Japanese got "lost" accidentally until Pearl Harbor happened, and the Gulf of Tonkin was Vietnam genuinely wanting to start an aggressive war against the US.

The rule of thumb with government is that the only thing you can be sure of is that what they are telling you isn't true.

I fractured my pelvis, an injury that went undetected for over a month (despite two x-rays on the day of the injury).

We know Epstein was attached and strangled a couple of weeks ago, it is highly plausible that it was that attack that was the cause of his broken bones.

The thing that really puts the nails in the coffin for a "suicide" is the 2 cameras not working at the same time when this so called suicide transpired. Not just 1 camera, but 2. At the same time.

This guy was murdered (or switched out, but I find that less likely due to it being a hell of a complicated procedure when you can just off him).

The USA...biggest banana republic in the world.
