Wednesdays at Kad Farang supermarket in Chiang Mai does not use plastic bags on Wednesdays and you either bring your own bags or use the extra packing boxes.

Or you go there on Tuesday or Thursday!

Mrs Fantom and I just take our own carrier bags to supermarkets and markets. Always refuse any plastic bags offered. Absolutely no problem whatsoever.

On the other hand we continue to be amazed at the number of farangs who never consider this approach and happily depart with about 5 dugongs worth of plastic bags in their trollies.

Perhaps, if members on TV were to take a lead in refusing plastic bags instead of expecting someone else to do it for them we could make a significant impact.

When I asked the cashier 'Why so many half empty plastic bags' I was recently told at my local Tesco that Thai people will not accept for example sanitary wear in the same bag as say bread. Or a can of insect spray in with a couple of bottles of beer. Each must have their own.  Doooooh.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on August 20 called on all Thais to help the government achieve its goal of keeping the seas clean of plastic after eight-month-old rescued dugong Mariam died after having consumed eight pieces of plastic.

So mister PM asking doesn't get changes made.... Thais are lazy..... just change the laws in Thailand.

Ban plastic bags, ban plastic cups, ban plastic cutlery, ban all the types of food containers and packaging which are know to be toxic.

Go to the large supermarket chains & tell them to stop issuing plastic bags in shops and change to bio-degradable alternatives.

Go to their suppliers and tell them to use alternative packaging.

Go to the plastic bag manufacturers tell them they have a time scale to change to bio-degradable alternatives or close down production, that will stop the supply to all the small shops and markets, street vendors !

Time to do something positive!

The plastic problem is pretty much all my fault and I can blame no body else because I'm the one who took the plastic out of the all those shops nodody made me do it and I could have refused but I didn't.No amount blaming others will take away my contribution to the plastic problem.

Correct, convenience - I now go armed with my own cloth or reusable heavy duty plastic ???? or just hand carry small items if I don't have my own bag.

It's not all that difficult - just make it a habit.

The solution is simple:

Make cannabis/hemp a root agricultural product of Thailand.

Rice, seafood, and hemp as root agricultural products, along with Chinese infrastructure investment, (with environmental concerns a priority for any new deals), will take Thailand to a new level of prosperity.

Oh, why is hemp so important? :

Meanwhile, back at the noodle shop, nobody calls on Prayut to join the fight against corruption!

Nice point! What this is, is a facade. It's a great 'good-image' display that looks positive. Why not jump on board 'the good fight.'

I began (when I can remember) taking my own bags to 7-11.

A Dutch guy told me once that his country banned food sold in plastics. Wow, what if that was done here!

Can you imagine a hand full of hot noodles?

It would improve your juggling skills.

Forget it..its too late. When i have to get into an argument at McDonalds to stop putting <deleted> in my bag and almost get into a fight with the manager or go into a 7-11 and watch the nimwit in front of me get his noodles microwaved, placed in a bag, plus spoon, tissues, then another bag its an impossibility.

If the locals don't get enough plastic with their purchase they are humiliated.

Educating the locals not to litter might help. The place looks like a dump. Those plastic bags don't throw themselves into the sea. Just saying.

Yep, plastic bags are not the problem, if we ceased as of today wrapping food stuffs in plastic half the world would starve! it keeps food fresh, only ever read negatives. ????

With all due respect Sir,,, you need to talk seriously to your Government not only to enact laws

but to ensure they are obeyed,,,, the latter being just about non existent in Thailand

They dont care about the environment; here is a report today on a Thai company and sea oil spill disaster.

An inquiry into the Montara oil spill at sea disaster found PTT(EP’s) standards were not adequate and that “the company’s personnel on the rig demonstrated a manifestly inadequate understanding of their contents and knowledge of what they required”.

The company’s “senior personnel on the rig and onshore were also deficient in their decision‐making and judgments in relation to a number of important matters”, commissioner David Borthwick said.

Borthwick found PTT(EP) also “seriously misled” the regulator and said its licence should be reviewed.

However, PTT(EP) was fined only $500,000 and was allowed to resume production.

Eight Million Tonnes Of Plastic Are Going Into The Ocean Each Year

This is not just a plastic bag you dump on the street.

You tell me who is doing that !!

There must be criminal organizations making profit out of plastic by dumping.

There is no one taking actions to those who dump it in the oceans.

The PM should practice what he preaches, which of course he will not. Still thinks he can tell people what to do rather than lead he commands. Sad !

I'd actually like to see what the army recruits serving him at home bring back Mrs Prayuth's shopping wrapped in into their (...or State's) house... Same as all the other 'ministers' &Co., civil servants, ...generals and tutti quanty! Let me guess: plastic bags. And which one of them are not having their staff to burn the garbage, including plastic bags and packings at the far corner of the garden? As it seems an integral part of 'thainess'...

Admit that plastic is a serious matter. However, I would call every body to join the fight against Prayut...????

What's your idea? Wrapping him in plastic bags and burning the whole, or what? Imagine the pollution!

There is a very big difference between talking about the country's problems (not only plastic) and actually doing something about them.  Some might say that Mr Chan-o-Cha is the master of 'lip service'.

Come on, please, don't bring the man onto more silly ideas! I guess he already spends hours a day practising in front of a mirror with a tribe of 'visual advisers', and now you want him to be busy with his lips too? LOL!

With his trousers, I don't see any issue, as long as they're clean and he keeps them on. As for the mouth, oh my, should ask some 'specialists' alongside the Mekong to pour concrete in there, instead, how many cubes would be needed, the question...
