WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged on Tuesday that Islamic State militants are gaining strength in some areas but said the militant group's capacity to conduct attacks has been greatly diminished.

"It's complicated. There are certainly places where ISIS is more powerful today than they were three or four years ago," Pompeo said in an interview with CBS "This Morning." But he said the group's self-proclaimed caliphate is gone and its attack capability has been made much more difficult.

Pompeo was asked about a New York Times report that the Islamic militant group was gaining new strength in Iraq and Syria.

President Donald Trump said in December that U.S. troops succeeded in their mission to defeat Islamic State in Syria and were no longer needed in the country. "We won," he said at the time.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged on Tuesday that Islamic State militants are gaining strength in some areas but said the militant group’s capacity to conduct attacks has been greatly diminished. Roger Fortuna has more.

Pompeo said the plan to defeat Islamic State in the region was executed with 80 other countries and was very successful.

However, he cautioned that there is always risk that there will be a resurgence of "radical Islamic terrorist groups," including al Qaeda and Islamic State.

In Geneva, a senior Chinese official warned on Tuesday that there was a danger of Islamic State militants re-emerging in Syria and called for progress in the political process between the Damascus government and the opposition to end the war.

China has long worried about ethnic Uighurs from China’s far western region of Xinjiang who have traveled clandestinely to Syria and Iraq to fight with Islamist groups there.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for a wedding suicide attack that killed 63 people and wounded 182 on Saturday in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

"We won,"

The Coalition against ISIS won, including the Kurds and the insurgent Free Syrian Army. Both of which the U.S. abandoned in its withdrawal to almost complete obliteration by Assad's army and Russian "paramilitary" forces.

if i recall correctly, ISIS kept growing and defeating Free Syrian Army, Kurds held up well, until Russia stepped in. Yes Russia wiped out Free Syrian Army as well, but if it was not for Russia, ISIS would be ruling half of the middle east. It was Russian who cut off all ISIS oil and money supplies which came from or through Turkey.

Remember all the brand new vigo trucks? and no one had any idea where it came from, just miracle how ISIS could get hundreds and hundreds of brand new cars and no one had any idea or money trail where it all came from.

Also as much as i do not support Iran, it was Iran and its proxies who also helped fight ISIS.

ISIS by any other name ........

Isis is not a location to be pacified or a conventional army to be defeated. ISIS is an idea of some people wanting to live a certain way.  Unless you provide a better idea, You cannot defeat it you can only try to contain it at great cost. Al-Qaeda morphed to Taliban, or ISIS or Al Kabab etc .

All nonsense towards perpetual war for perpetual peace. And profits for the industrial complex.

Gee. Isn't there one other nation whose assistance was also invaluable in defeating Isis. The nation that helped drive Isis out of Iraq entirely? Which gives the lie to your assertion that Isis would be now be ruling half of the Middle East of not for Russia? Hmmm...I'm having trouble recalling its name. Help a fellow thiavisa.com member out, won't you?

So you're saying that the US played no significant role in driving Isis out of Iraq and eastern Syria? It's not so much a question of my imagination as it is of your apparent memory loss.

Isis claimed Raqqa was the capital of the Caliphate. How was Isis driven out of Raqqa?  What about Mosul? What about all the cities and territories occupied by Isis between those 2 cities?

Why do not you tell me how

Decisive Russian action ensures defeat of ISIS in Syria; threats of terror looms large in Central Asia

The Russian military operation in Syria has been decisive in achieving victory against the ISIS and securing peace against the terror network. By the end of Oct 2017 the Syrian territory controlled by ISIS had shrunk to 5%, compared to over 70% before the start of the operation by the Russian Air Force. Since 2015, about 1,000 cities and towns in Syria with an aggregate area of over 500,000 sq km have been liberated, and 1.1 million people have returned to their homes, according to persons familiar with the process.
