webfact Posted August 22, 2019 Share Posted August 22, 2019 One, maybe two agricultural agriculture chemicals to be banned By The Nation Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Mananya Thaiset has announced that at least one or two of the three controversial agricultural chemicals – paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorpyrifos – will be banned in Thailand by the end of this year. Noting that the Bhumjai Thai Party has given her freedom to make a decision on the matter and that anyone lobbying for the continued use of the chemicals would find it hard to do so, Mananya told reporters on Wednesday that she had set up a committee made up of officials from the Agriculture, Public Health and Industry ministries to study the impacts of the use of these three herbicides for weed and grass control. The committee is expected to report its findings within 15 days. “By the end of this year, one or two chemicals will be prohibited for use,” she said adding, that no other chemical would be approved to replace them. She also confirmed that the decision would be taken after a thorough study of their impacts. AS far as I remember the report said over 30 currently banned pesticides and chemicals are still in use in Thailand while they are banned in other parts of the world. So in the space of 12 days she has come down from 3 to 2 and possibly one. katana Posted August 22, 2019 Share Posted August 22, 2019 It's a sad state of affairs that these insecticides are banned in some parts of the world for safety reasons, but the chemical companies are still allowed to produce them and profit from them by selling to countries with more lax safety regulations. As I understand it, Agent Orange was a generic name for Glyphosphate (Roundup) but it contained impurities which caused genetic defects in people coming in contact with it - for some generations. More recently, farmers and other uses of Glyphosphate have been developing cancers due to contact with Roundup/Glyphosphate. Given that the average farmer in Thailand would not have had much training in the use of agricultural chemicals, let alone correct disposal of containers, contamination of water or even correct protective clothing, the risk is much greater than in most Western countries. Agent Orange was 245T supplied on tender by Dow Chemicals and because the US Govt would only except the lowest bid the product was not throughly cleaned and contained high levels of dioxon which was the the cause of a lot of the problems that occurred.Agent Orange was blanket sprayed as an off label use (illegal use) by the US GOV. Roundup is target sprayed and cannot be applied by air only ground rigs and handsprays. People are intitled to put their opinions forward but outright bulls!!T as astatement of fact is another thing. You can sue the company in the US for millions, in EU the stuff is considered safe. Talking about glyphosphate. Some EU countries have tried to ban it. But Brussels says they can't. somo Posted August 23, 2019 Share Posted August 23, 2019 Neither of the weedkillers are banned in the states. The EU banned paraquat but only France banned Glyphosate. Most of the comments here come from people who have no idea what they are talking about but want any excuse to bash Thailand.
