Police General Patcharawat Wongsuwan, former National Police chief and brother of Deputy PM General Prawit Wongsuwan, was injured along with five others when their van crashed against the fence of a Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway, police said.

Also injured in the crash was former Senate speaker Prasopsuk Boondej.

Police said the accident took place at 9.15am on August 24 on the outbound motorway at kilometre marker No 0+900 in Bangkok’s Suan Luang district.

The hit the fence as it exited the Srirat elevated expressway on to the motorway, before flipping into the ditch on the side.

The driver Pratiphat Thaethaisong, 32, and five passengers were injured and rushed to the Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital before they were transferred to Phramongkutklao Hospital.

Apart from Patcharawat and Prasopsuk, the other passengers were Wiset Wisitwanyu, CEO of CPRAM Co Ltd; Supawadee Techaburna, investment manager and financial adviser to Maybank Kim Eng, and Patcharee Mahithithamthorn.

Officials at Phramongkutklao Hospital said nobody had sustained severe injuries or broken bones, though the doctors want to keep them in for observation.

A source from the hospital said Patcharawat had a swelling on the head and has to undergo a brain scan to look for possible internal injuries.

Pol Lt-Colonel Subin Inchuay, an inspector with highway police, quoted the driver as saying that they were heading to Pattaya for an inspection trip. The police officer said the cause of the accident is under investigation.

Another report suggested the driver of the hired vehicle was plugging in his phone to recharge it. Sounds about right. No mention of if these people were wearing seat belts, another piece of useful information not included. Perhaps the report has been 'cleaned up' to satisfy someones interests.

'heading to Pattaya for an inspection trip'. Inspecting what, I wonder.

I am guessing that apart from a boys weekend out, they were investigating a soon to be announced government project they are thinking to invest in.

Strange they go by hired van.

As a retired police general you have 2 police officers at your disposal to drive you around (1 for you, 1 for your spouse). I presume he also owns a car, so there is no need to hire a van.

probably off for a dirty week-end - covering tracks the best way they could, hire van booked under false name etc.

That driver is in BIG trouble... On account of his passengers' statuses.

He better go into hiding.

Doubt that, you can bet the name/s used for the booking don't match any names reported in the news article - so clearly no trouble for the driver - silence in golden.

Maybe a word will be sent down the corridors of power now to do something more than just talk about the death traps called public transport !

Why does he live in a sad world? They do that sort of thing here. Did you purposely gloss over the police / politician pedo ring in the north not too long ago? That was one way they got to the girls.

Some people choose to live in reality and others with their head in the sand. Your call. But while you have your head in the sand, don’t be surprised if someone gets you from behind.
