Kampot to be home to Cambodia’s largest ecotourism destination

Kampot province is a few years away from hosting Cambodia’s largest ecotourism destination. Dr Alexander Evengroen, CEO of Chamreun Sambath Construction Co Ltd, told Khmer Times in an interview last week that they have already started to develop a large swath of land in the province where KC Adventure Resort will rise.

“We are already six months into it,” he said. The project is being developed by Chamreun Sambath Construction Co Ltd, a well-known property developer. The project, which has an estimated cost of $20 million, is located in Kampot province’s Chhouk district, which is less than 25 kilometers away from the famous Durian Roundabout in Kampot Town, the provincial capital.

Mr Evengroen said the area’s location and features make it an excellent choice for such a project. Kampot lies between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, two of Cambodia’s most important urban areas. Also, there are mountains, rivers, and forests that run through the project’s location.

My love for Kampot is waning a little. More grumpy farang residents, from Snooky, and it is getting busier and faster. There again this happens in many places and I am just a bit grumpy about the inevitable changes.

Sad to hear that diversity is overshadowing the towns layed back atmopshere. I don't frequent places where grumps hangout and when in Cambodia, I spend my time at a rural, English language school for country kids an hour north of town on Highway 41. No grumps allowed...lol.

Kampot is home to an army of grumpy ngo's and motodops.

The last attraction was the excellent restaurant The Rusty Keyhole on the river side, which is now surrounded by the green screen of death. Why can't they just leave these places alone? Do we really need more concrete? On the upside there is no TM30 yet.

Not for long.  The Chinese are already buying up properties in anticipation of turning Kampot into another casino destination like Sihanoukville.

I'm not sure re casinos but I have heard rumors of them wanting to establish  a second port and special economic zone in Kampot. which would equally kill the environment and put the kibosh on ecotourism.

Every time I come to Phnom Penh (I'm there now) the Chinese presence has increased. Despite the city's size it is really noticeable now.

Especially in the banks....I was stuck more than an hour waiting to deposit cash at ABA, they have machines and you'd think it would be quick but each machine was occupied by Chinese putting in wads and wads of cash. Each time I'd think surely they were done they'd whip out another big stack  of $100 bills, no one was putting in less than $10,000 (except of course me, when it finally came my turn, LOL...) and many were depositing more than that.

I returned yesterday from Siem Reap and it was pleasant to see so many western type tourists on the streets. The Chinese are certainly in decline since my previous visits. In fact, for 5 consecutive nights, the Siem Reap Airport channel on my hotel room TV clearly listed 9 evening/night time flights from/to mainland China as "CANCELLED" as was Air Asia's morning direct flight from/to Phuket. At the big Crocodile Farm on the outskirts of the city, not one tour bus was parked outside when I passed by. Normally there would be a few bringing the Chinese to see the crocodiles and (more importantly) buy shoes and handbags. This Farm, in my opinion, is a sad and cruel place. Siem Reap, I am glad to say, has no casinos - yet!!!

The Interior Minister in Cambodia has instructed all residence owners throughout the country to report foreigners who come to stay in their residences within 24 hours in order to strengthen immigration law enforcement.

The interior ministry provided a seven-point memorandum noting that the owners of all residence properties were to report to local police within 24 hours details of any foreigners residing on their property.

If the residence owners were foreigners, they must provide additional information of the people residing in the properties within 24 hours, the report said.

“The statement added that General Department of Immigration has a responsibility to implement and disseminate the memorandum and its contents to residence owners and all relevant officials around the country,” the Khmer Times noted in its report.

There you have your tm30.
