webfact
Koh Phangan: Myanmar guy has all the excuses but the evidence points to guilt Picture: Naew Na Police on the holiday island of Koh Phangan in Thailand's south arrested a 23 year old man from Myanmar after a spate of thefts from foreigners in bungalows and hotel rooms. The Mia So had been seen scaling a wall and was found in possession of a lot of incriminating items, reported Naew Na. Nevertheless, he has denied that he is a thief. A group of foreigners staying in Ban Thong Sala went to the island police on Monday and the constabulary with the help of a phu yai ban soon stopped and searched the suspect who was found in possession of a phone, necklace, 1,160 baht and a black wallet. A check on his room uncovered gold rings and bracelets, an iPad, wrist watch and foreign currency. The owner of a bungalow development said he had seen the suspect climbing a wall and asked him what he was doing. He said he was coming for a look as it looked like a nice place. There had earlier been a theft there. One foreigner identified items as his and a picture of foreign currency on the suspect's phone was his cash. The suspect claimed he was not a thief and had a job earning 12,000 baht a month as a cleaner. He claimed to have gone to the bungalow to see a foreign friend. Regarding the wallet he said he found that at the Full Moon Party and it contained no money. The picture of the foreign currency on his phone was cash he had got in tips. Police dismissed all this as nonsense and detained him on a charge of theft. You see a nice place and rather than go through the gate you climb over the wall. Happens every day.

No evidence other than one piece of A4 with crossing out and scribbles was presented to the court. No credible cross examination was allowed. Anyway this was Koh Tao not Koh Phangan.
