A fishing boat capsized at the mouth of the Chao Phraya river in Samut Prakan Monday night after being hit by the wash from a freighter. One crew member drowned and 22 others were rescued.

Police said the Por Thanu Thong fishing boat capsized at the mouth of the Chao Phraya where it feeds into the the Gulf of Thailand near the end of Soi Bang Pu 72, often referred to as the “2nd Bang Saen” in Tambon Thay Ban of Samut Prakan’s Muang district.

Three of the crew were rescued by a Navy patrol boat and 19 others were picked up by a passing fishing boat. They were taken to the Samut Prakan pier at 10 pm.

The captain of the fishing boat, Weera Chaorai, 61, told police that his boat was heading out to sea when a large freighter increased speed to overtake in the narrow navigational waterway leading to the Gulf of Thailand.

Weera said the freighter caused big waves that hit their boat causing it flip. He said his crew members were resting in the cabin but managed to get out in time before the boat sunk. However, one worker, Sing Kuakij, 50, was trapped inside and drowned.

The survivors hung on to 200-litre plastic bins used for storing fish on the river until the navy vessel and another fishing boat spotted them.

Officials will try to retrieve the body later Tuesday.
