BANGKOK (Reuters) - The number of foreign tourists arriving in Thailand rose 5.59% in August from a year earlier, with Chinese visitor numbers rebounding strongly, the tourism ministry said on Tuesday

Yet all the bars, restaurants clubs are saying it's dead ?

Wow astonishing ! If they are that sure it can do better maybe they should manage it for themselves for a year or so. Also noticeable is that "Minor" is pushing for it to go through the Thai legal system.

The surveys stated are alarming for next year ............

A 20% increase in rooms, with a 20% decrease in occupation = 40% more rooms than required.

That being said, it could be true but what is up 5.6% of?  Just read the stats from 2018, did have the new ones for 2019, up to August, but lost them.  Thailand was not in the top 10 for this year.

If the Thai stats are different, then how can they be explained in comparison to these because these were not pulled out of a hot?  According to all I have read on this forum, the arrivals appear to be much higher than even the highest records worldwide, such as the contention that the medical services rank above such countries as France and Spain.  Is somebody "fixing things" by counting people entering the airports to say good bye or to greet their visitors/friends.  That alone would pump things way up.

'nuf sed.

Since I moved here, about 10 years ago, the numbers are always up!

Fun observation: when I came here first in 1997, you almost couldn't move through Patpong Nightmarked- you WERE moved, by the pushing crowd!

2019: you can take your girlfriend by the hand and skip through the market and not even touch anybody!

So: reality and numbers somehow don't add up!

Contrary to many people on this thread banging on about lies and statistics, it is perfectly reasonable to suggest that the numbers are up year on year. The effects of the the Phoenix boat tragedy, in July 2018, were mostly felt by cancellations in August of last year. The question is whether the year on year increase can be maintained over the next few months compared to the general recovery after the cancellations from Phoenix. That is more debatable.

What they mean is number of foreign arrivals as per immigration in certain visa/exemption classes. Immigration isn't releasing data of the length of the stays, meaning any connecting travel that requires clearing immigration is counted as tourists. The figures aren't usable.

I think they count on the bases of the arrival cards...if u in transit u dont fill such a card...

for thai it does not matter from which country the tourists come...

thousands and thousands of Chinese group tours 5 days max..is ok....not the big spenders but still number is up....

if westerners decline cause of currency and environmental issues...( sea meditarean long time ago a rubbish basin is now Cristal clear....thai beaches / pattaya ...samui...kho chang...and nakkhorn area / down developed close to  klong quality ) thai government could not care less ..

soon a holiday in greece is cheaper than fly all the way to thailand...

the only asset Thai has is cheap mass prostitution...that still draws old men from around the world...everything else ( environment money security etc. ) most other countrys is far better...for chinese thailand is near and a group  tour chicken cage style is affordable to leave the treadmill for a short while...

last time I left through Suvarnabhumi the crowds there was shocking took me close to two hours to pass everything...so their statistics I think is accurate...indian chinese all over the place but only here and there a few westerners..

You do if you transit to a regional airline, say you arrive with Thai at swampy and take a connecting with Air Asia from Don Muang. Or any other connecting method. I suspect quite a few have just a single overnight stay to wait for the connecting one. Impossible to say for sure though as only immigration has the stats and hasn't released them AFAIK.

Up 5.6%

So thats 5 people and a child?

I think figures will become more accurate if those creating the statistics start using calculators... Doing it in their head, may not be the most efficient or accurate way of doing things...

For a month we heard nothing but bad news that tourism was down , Chinese were not coming , indians were going to save Thailand tourism , ministers were needing more time abroad , bars needed to stay open longer BUT as it turns out it was all fake news . The real news is not only tourism is doing well and up but even more than last year.

Ok - I get it.

1. Tourist Numbers up x.xxxx%

    Spending up ×.××××%  OR

2. Tourist Numbers down 0.××××%

    but Spending up x.xxxx% OR

3. Chinese Tourists down but

    Indian Tourists up and

    SPENDING UUUP BY x.xxxx%

4. If Tourist Numbers down and            Spending not up, projected              Numbers of everything will be

    up by years end.

Blahblahblahblahblah - boring!

I learned from educated Thais that you never trust whatever is being claimed.

Thais know themselves.

Any announcement needs to be met with suspicion and read between the lines.

In Thailand there is a very weak attachment to truth, so words are fairly meaningless on their face.

Racist ? Much ?

Of course it’s reasonable - it might also be <deleted>. Who knows.

Given I doubt a single poster in this thread has any connection whatsoever with the travelling Chinese community all the outpouring of incredulity is based on nothing at all. (Unless you have a trainspotter type counting them in at Swampy?)
